Sanjay Kapoor was born on October 17, 1965, in Mumbai (Chembur). He is the son of film producer Surinder Kapoor and Nirmal Kapoor. He has elder brothers Anil Kapoor and Boney Kapoor, and a sister, Reena Marwah. Sanjay Kapoor is related to the Kapoor family, which also has distant ties to the Raj Kapoor family.He completed his studies till 10th standard, and later wanted to study abroad, but could not complete it due to family financial challenges.

Film debut and career beginning

Sanjay Kapoor started his acting career in 1995 with the film "Prem", in which he played a romantic role opposite Tabu. However, the film's release was delayed as it was in production since 1989. That same year, he got the film Raja, in which he shared the screen with Madhuri Dixit. Raja proved to be a huge commercial success. Sanjay then acted in several films – such as Auzaar, Mohabbat, Sirf Tum (1999), etc. Some of his films received critical acclaim, such as Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe in which he played a negative role.

Romance with Tabu on the sets of 'Prem'

Not many people know that Sanjay Kapoor and Tabu were once close. A romantic relationship began between the two during the shooting of their debut film, Prem (1995). In an old interview, Sanjay revealed, "I was dating Tabu at the time, but we didn't talk until the film was finished."
Although the relationship didn't last long, their chemistry made the film memorable.

Sanjay Kapoor married Maheep Sandhu in December 1997. They have two children—daughter Shanaya Kapoor (born in 1999) and son Jahaan Kapoor (born in 2005). Their daughter Shanaya made her film debut in the 2025 film Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan.
