Supriya Pathak was born on January 7, 1961, to renowned Gujarati stage personality and veteran actress Dina Pathak and her husband, Baldev Pathak. Her father, a Punjabi, worked as a costume designer for stars like Rajesh Khanna and Dilip Kumar. She has an elder sister, Ratna Pathak, who has been active in theater and films. She is married to renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah.

Supriya grew up in the Parsi colony of Dadar, Mumbai. She attended J.B. Vachha High School and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nalanda Dance Research Centre, University of Mumbai, specializing in Bharatanatyam.

Career

Supriya Pathak began her acting career in a revival of the play "Maina Gurjari" directed by her mother, Dina Pathak. She then starred in the play "Biwiyon Ka Madrasa," which was staged at the Prithvi Theatre. It was there that Jennifer Kendal (Shashi Kapoor's wife) noticed her talent and recommended her for director Shyam Benegal's film "Kalyug" (1981). For her portrayal of Subhadra in the film, she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.
