Tun Tun’s real name was uma devi yatra. She was born and brought up in Amroha Zilla of Uttar Pradesh in 1923. Tun Tun’s childhood was so difficult because her family was killed for the land disputes.

Two days before her death, she said in an interview that I don't know how my parents used to look because they passed away when I was two and a half years old. I had a brother of 8-9 years old named Hari. We used to live in Alipore. One day my brother was also murdered, then I must have been four to five years old.
Tun Tun’s Childhood was spent in extreme Poverty. One day she met Akhtar Abbas Kazi who was an excise duty inspector, he supported Tun Tun but after the India-Pakistan war they were apart Kazi was in Pakistan and Tun Tun was in Mumbai.
At the age of 23, she ran away from home and came to Mumbai. Tun Tun knocked on the door of well-known composer Naushad and told him that I sing well, give me work or else I will jump into the sea. Naushad immediately signed him up for playback singing. Tun Tun sang many songs for many years but seeing not much success, Naushad asked him to try his hand at acting. Naushad talked to Dilip Kumar and got Tun Tun to work in Babul (1950). In the same film, her name was changed from Uma Devi to Tun Tun and from here Bollywood also got its first female comedian. Tun Tun worked in films like Aarpar, Mr. and Mrs. 55, Pyaasa, and Namak Halal. He died on 23 November 2003.
