On October 25, 1957, Hindi cinema witnessed a historic moment. It was a day when the biggest stars of the film industry were all gathered at one place. The event was the 4th Filmfare Awards Night. What made this awards night special was the fact that color films were not in existence at the time; only black-and-white films were in circulation, providing entertainment to the masses.

Today, we take a look back at the 4th Filmfare Awards held in 1957, the video of which is also available online. As for the awards ceremony, legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, who monopolized the Best Female Playback Singer category, was seen in a saree, carefully managing her pallu. Alongside her, the iconic playback singer and actor Kishore Kumar made his appearance in a suit, accompanied by his wife, actress and singer Ruma Guha Thakurta.

Actress Nimmi, known for films like Amar, Aan, and Barsaat, was seen at the event wearing a saree with a floral garland in her hair. Actress Nargis Rabadi, who was known in the industry as Shammi, also graced the ceremony. Nargis was recognized for her roles in films such as Malhar, Sangdil, Aag Ka Darya, Kasturi, and Khoj. She was joined by actress Nadira, known for her roles in Aan, Shri Chaar Sau Bees, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Pakeezah, Julie, Sagar, and Tamanna.

Moreover, veteran actor-director Guru Dutt, known for films like Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhavi Ka Chand, Aar-Paar, CID, and Jaal, was spotted at the awards with his wife Geeta Dutt.

The night also saw actress Kumkum, known for her roles in Gawaiya, Mr. and Mrs. 55, Pritam Ki Bhabi, Mother India, Champa, Pyaasa, Juhi, Ghar Sansar, and Sunanda.

Famous playback singer Mohammad Rafi also made an appearance in a suit. Comedians Mohammad Umar Mukri, Sourabh Modi, and child artist Baby Naz, who was working in the industry at the time, were also present.

The ceremony was graced by actor Rajendra Kumar, director Mahboob Khan, actor Yakub Khan, actress and producer Shobhana Samarth, and many others.

The evening also featured the legendary actor Raakumar, known for his famous line, “Johnny, jinke ghar sheeshe ke hote hain, woh doosre ke ghar mein pathar nahi phenka karte” (Johnny, those who have houses made of glass do not throw stones at others’ houses). The legendary Dilip Kumar, known for films like Saudagar, Aag Ka Darya, Izzatdar, Kanoon Apna Apna, Karma, Mashaal, Duniya, Mazdoor, Shakti, and Vidhata, was also in attendance.

On this occasion, the iconic Nargis Dutt, mother of Sanjay Dutt, was spotted as well. Nargis was known for her performances in films like Saudagar, Shree 420, Awaara, Chori Chori Aag, Andaaz, Barsaat, and Mother India.

Seeing these stars together, one can only say – Old is Gold.
