It's been 25 years since Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge released on March 24, 2000, but it is still remembered as a hilarious romantic comedy that can rival any contemporary comedy in Bollywood and has stood the test of time in Bollywood. Directed by David Dhawan and produced by Gordhan Tanwani, the film stars top stars Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles. It became one of the highest-grossing films of the year soon after its release.
Karisma Kapoor's Sapna & Her Three Quirky Uncles
The story revolves around Sapna, a sweet girl played by Karisma Kapoor, who is raised by her three strange, quirky uncles. Prabhunath (Paresh Rawal), a strict religious man who teaches Sapna to do dharam karma, Bholanath (Om Puri), a fitness freak former wrestler who forces Sapna to exercise and practice wrestling every day and the third uncle Vickynath (Anupam Kher), a western culture loving fashionista lover who always forces Sapna to live in his strange foreign style. Each uncle wants to get Sapna married to a boy of their own choice, and all three of them expect their own style to be followed by Sapna's future husband, which leads to hilarious situations.
Salman-Karisma's Hilarious Love Story & Europe Chase
Poor Sapna is tired and frustrated of living under the pressure of these three uncles and now dreams of running away from this boring routine life and traveling to Europe. But her uncles refuse to let her go. Finally, Sapna tells her nanny, Mary (Himani Shivpuri), everything about her frustrations and dreams of a Europe tour. When the nanny talks to her uncles, the uncles get angry and throw Mary out of the house. The nanny, who also works in another house, shows Sapna's photo to the son of that family, Raja Oberoi (Salman Khan) and his father, Mr. Oberoi (Kader Khan) and tells them about Sapna's troubles. Raja likes Sapna's photo very much and decides that he will marry Sapna at any cost and free her from the troubles of her obsessive uncles. Meanwhile, Sapna runs away from home but her uncle Vicky catches her at the airport and when he comes to know that Sapna wants to travel abroad, he takes her custody to make a tour abroad. Raja also follows Sapna to Europe and starts meeting Sapna again and again on one pretext or the other. After some comedy encounters in the beginning, both of them finally start loving each other. Finally, both of them return to India, but now Raja has a lot of challenges to somehow make Sapna's three uncles like him as their son-in-law. That means he has to show his wrestling skills, perform religious duties, and win hearts by becoming ultra-modern. Ultimately, Raja wins the hearts of Sapna's uncles through his various comical antics.
Other actors in the film include Satish Kaushik, Johnny Lever, Deepak Tijori, Kashmira Shah, Farida Jalal, Dara Singh, Rakesh Bedi, Usha Bachani, Mayur Verma.
Made on a budget of 11 crores, the David Dhawan-directed film brought out the comedy elements, making it a hallmark of 90s Bollywood cinema. The film had a box office collection of around 40 crores.
The soundtrack of 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge' was composed by Himesh Reshammiya. It was his first full-length Bollywood album. Its songs became very popular, with tracks like 'Chamiya, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Pyar Dilon Ka Mela Hai, Tera Pallu Sarka Jaye Re, Dheere Dheere Chalna, O Mr Raja, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Hain Na Bolo' still being popular among listeners. The album sold around 1.8 million units, making it one of the best-selling albums of the year.
The film was shot in many places, including beautiful locations in Europe.
During filming, Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor shared a great rapport off-screen, which was reflected in their on-screen chemistry as well. The two often had light banter.
According to reports, the original title of the film was 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', and the film also features a song with this title. It may be noted that a film with the same title was made in 2004 made by David Dhawan and starring Salman Khan. Incidentally, that film also had the song 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', but with a different tune. The film was released in theatres in Canada.
So director David Dhawan wanted to change the name to Mujhse Shaadi Karogi so that it would sound more like the Yash Raj Films that released it. He wanted the film to resemble Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which has its shadows in the film.
- This was Salman Khan and Karisma's second and last film together. The first was 'Chal Mere Bhai'.
- It is said that this film is a remake of Ek Phool Char Kaante, which was a David Dhawan-style film.
- If rumours are to be believed, the title song of the TV serial Aaha (1995) was remade as "Dheere Dheere Chalna, Yun Na Tu Matakna" in this film.
- Some video clips from the song "Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge" were used by rapper Horsepower PCs in the song.
- Karisma had three films one after the other under the same name as Sapna, in the films Hum Saath Saath Hain, Jaanwar and Chal Mere Bhai.
