When it comes to doing something different or taking a risk in Bollywood, Aamir Khan’s name is always at the top. With his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, the actor has made a decision that has sent ripples through the film industry. Aamir Khan is not just an actor—he's an artist who works with fresh ideas and lives cinema with passion. Now, with Sitaare Zameen Par (Stars on Earth), his soon-to-be-released film, he has taken a stand that has shocked many in the business.
Aamir has completely refused to sell the digital rights to the film. More surprisingly, he even turnedown a massive ₹120 crore offer from Amazon Prime Video. Yes, you read that right. The reason behind rejecting such a huge amount wasn't money, but his vision and commitment to the theatrical experience of cinema.
Why Did He Reject Such a Big Offer?
In today’s era, most films land on OTT platforms within 8 weeks of their theatrical release. Audiences know that if they wait a little, the same film will be available “free” (under a subscription) on their mobile or TV screens. This trend has significantly reduced the number of people going to cinemas.
Aamir wants to break this mindset. He strongly believes that the true magic of cinema is experienced on the big screen, and to bring audiences back to theatres, something radical must be done.
Sitaare Zameen Par – Not Just a Film, but an Experiment
Aamir wants to test if people will still go to the theatres if the film isn't quickly made available on OTT. If this works, it could become a game-changer not only for his film but for the entire industry.
YouTube Release – But on His Terms
Aamir's plan is to release the film on YouTube in a paid format after it completes its theatrical run. That means it won't be available for free there either. The most important aspect of this plan? Aamir himself will decide the timing of the digital release, not any OTT platform.
Had he signed the deal with Amazon Prime, he would’ve been required to release the film on digital platforms just eight weeks after its theatrical debut. But Aamir believes that each film has its own pace and journey, and it’s unfair to force it into a preset timeline.
What Could Be the Impact?
If Sitaare Zameen Par performs better than expected at the box office, this could open a new path for Bollywood. Producers may stop relying solely on OTT and consider extending their films' theatrical window. It could even mark the return of India’s film industry to a true “theatre-first culture.”
However, if audiences still don't show up at theatres, the experiment will not only result in a creative setback for Aamir but also a direct financial loss of ₹120 crore. It will also make it clear that early OTT availability isn’t the only reason behind dwindling theatre audiences.
The film Sitaare Zameen Par is slated for release in theatres on June 20, and it is directed by R.S. Prasanna. What the outcome will be—only time will tell. But one thing is certain: Aamir Khan has once again done what he does best—go against the tide, take bold risks, and make the industry rethink its choices.
