His parents were famous figures in the Mumbai film industry. The film producer Tahir Hussain served as father to Aamir while the director Nasir Hussain became his uncle. Living in a film family should have provided Aamir an easy path to stardom yet his journey proved challenging. He showed great curiosity and energetic behavior during his childhood years. Aamir gained his first movie role in "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" (1973) when he was eight years old under the direction of his uncle. The minor role in that film ignited his future interest in performing.

Aamir had to face numerous obstacles during his early years. Occasions when his father's movies failed to perform caused financial hardship for the family. His father's financial issues with creditors left a strong impression on him while he grew up thus creating his future financial caution.

Aamir spent his childhood years without showing much enthusiasm for his studies. He preferred to focus on sports together with acting. The state tennis competition became his arena for success during his school years. Acting remained the permanent interest that pulled him toward it.
