An epic period musical sports ( cricket-centric) drama, Lagaan was released on June 15th 2001 and has completed 24 years and has now entered its 25th (Silver Jubilee) year.

Coincidentally, Aamir Khan's much-awaited latest sports-centric 2025 entertainer movie 'Sitaare Zameen Par' (with heroine Genelia Deshmukh) directed by R S Prasanna is expected to release in cinema theatres by next week-end.

Out here, in  'Sitaare Zameen Par', award-worthy movie, Aamir plays a adamant basketball coach who trains "neuro-divergent" players. The cast has several newcomer energetic, smart, talented "neuro-divergent" budding actors and also known popular celeb-actors.

The period movie  'Lagaan' is set in 1893, during the late Victorian period of British colonial rule in India. It was undoubtedly a challenging task to bring together everything, from an ensemble cast to a rural setup, to narrating anti-imperialism through its story. But the result of overcoming all these challenges were the numerous accolades: National Awards, being one of the most expensive Indian films at the time, and the cult status it eventually achieved. The film has now completed 24 years, and it's worth saying, there can never be another Lagaan.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India follows the inhabitants of a village in Central India who, burdened by high taxes and years of drought, are challenged by an arrogant British Indian Army officer to a game of cricket, as a wager to avoid paying the taxes they owe. The villagers face the arduous task of learning a game completely alien to them, and must play for a chance at liberation. As challenging as the story was, it was director Ashutosh Gowariker’s vision that brought it to life. From the screenplay to the dialogues, from the music to the performances, everything came together to make it a cult classic.

Lagaan (2001)  is also a landmark film as it was the maiden project of Aamir Khan Productions, marking Aamir Khan’s foray into film production. Though he was initially skeptical about doing a sports film, he eventually committed to the project, bringing his signature perfectionism. His performance earned him the International Indian Film Academy Award for Best Actor. Backing a risky period film about cricket and colonialism, Aamir Khan ( as smart, quick-witted romantic villager  'Bhuvan') made history in 2001.
