Anu Malik Raises Credit Claim Over Border 2 Song ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’

Sunny Deol’s upcoming film Border 2 is set to hit theatres in a few days, but ahead of its release, the song ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’ has sparked discussion. The track is a new rendition of the iconic 1997 Border song ‘Sandese Aate Hain’. The teaser of the song was released on December 29, following which composer Anu Malik raised the issue of being credited for the original composition.

Why Anu Malik Raised the Credit Issue

In a recent conversation, Anu Malik stated that he firmly believes ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’ has been recreated from the original song. While clarifying that he is not directly associated with the new version, he emphasized that since the original tune was composed by him, his name should be mentioned in the credits. He said, “You cannot make Border 2 without ‘Sandese Aate Hain’. Both Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar contributed to that song, so our names should be included in the credits in some form.”

The Legacy of Border

Directed by J.P. Dutta, the 1997 film Border featured Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, and Akshaye Khanna in key roles. Border 2, on the other hand, is being directed by Anurag Singh and stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahaan Shetty in lead roles. The original song ‘Sandese Aate Hain’ was composed by Anu Malik, written by Javed Akhtar, and sung by Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod. Over the years, it has become one of Indian cinema’s most emotional patriotic songs.

Team Behind the New Song ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’

The new version, ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’, has been composed by Mithoon, with additional lyrics penned by Manoj Muntashir. The song features vocals by Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra, and Diljit Dosanjh.
Anu Malik acknowledged that the song would sound impressive with voices like Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh, but reiterated that the core melody belongs to him.

Anu Malik also expressed hope that the new version would be as impactful as the original. He said, “Sonu is a phenomenal singer, and Arijit’s voice has magic. Their combination will be magical, but the tune remains Anu Malik’s. The contributions of Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar cannot be ignored.”

The Song Was Composed in Just Seven and a Half Minutes

Recalling the making of ‘Sandese Aate Hain’, Anu Malik shared that he and Javed Akhtar composed the song at home in just seven and a half minutes.
He said that while working on the song, an old tune suddenly came to his mind. As he hummed it, Javed Akhtar asked him to repeat it. Malik revealed that he had originally created that tune for another director who never used it. When Javed Akhtar suggested fitting that melody to the lyrics they had written, Malik agreed. He added, “Javed sahab suddenly got up and hugged me, saying that I had composed the song in just seven and a half minutes.”
