Some time ago, Divya Khosla and director Umesh Shukla interacted with the media and answered many questions. Here are the highlights from the conversation…
How much did you have to distance yourself from your real personality to bring this character alive on screen?
Divya Khosla – Umesh sir constantly reminded me that this girl is cunning and mean, and I am not like that in real life. For this role, I experienced life in the slums of Lucknow, picked up their dialect, and dressed accordingly. It was quite challenging but also a great learning experience. We tried to make it very interesting. (Neil Nitin Mukesh grey-shaded role in Ek Chatur Naar)
What about your role might come as a complete surprise for the audience?
Neil Nitin Mukesh – I’ve played a grey-shaded character named Abhishek in the film, which is very special and memorable for me. I am grateful to Umesh sir for giving me the opportunity to be part of such a challenging and powerful story. My character is not just a villain, but has multiple layers of an ordinary man, which makes him real. This unique mix of comedy and thriller was a first for me, and the guidance on set helped refine it. The beauty of this film is that it makes people laugh without slapstick, and that honesty is what makes it shine. (Umesh Shukla director interview Ek Chatur Naar)
How did the idea of naming the film Ek Chatur Naar come about?
Umesh Shukla – The idea for the title came directly from the story and the characters. The main character (Divya’s role) is very smart and clever. When we were writing the script, it was clear that this title fit best. You must have heard the song “Ek Chatur Naar,” and similarly, we’ve presented a new version infused with humor and thriller elements. This is not an old adaptation but rather a fresh and interesting take. (Divya Khosla slum-based character preparation)
What was the biggest challenge for you while portraying this role?
Divya Khosla – The most challenging part was that the character I played is completely different from me. She is a girl raised in a chawl and slum. I actually stayed for some time in a slum, right near an open drain, just to experience that environment and embody the character. It wasn’t easy because I don’t come from that background. But when the film was made and I saw it on screen, all the hard work, ups, and downs felt worth it. The film has truly turned out well.
Compared to your previous roles, how is this role new or different for you?
Neil Nitin Mukesh – I’ve always been attracted to grey-shaded roles, from Johnny Gaddaar till now. When my first film was about to release, it was the era of love stories, but I was offered two films simultaneously – Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Johnny Gaddaar. I knew I would only get one, and my confidence told me that if I chose Johnny Gaddaar, at least I wouldn’t get lost, and I would get the chance to prove myself. (Bollywood films set in Lucknow slums)
So far, I’ve done over 30 films, working with several National Award-winning directors, and I’ve always leaned towards roles that are not simply good or bad but layered – like in 7 Khoon Maaf, New York, Wazir, or Lafangey Parindey. When Umesh sir offered me this role, my first reaction was, “Is he a hero, a villain, or what?” But as the story unfolded, I realized that was its beauty. It’s a very real character caught in circumstances, evolving with life’s ups and downs. This film is full of twists, and I must say, the story is truly fascinating. Being part of it has been a very special experience for me. (Ek Chatur Naar audience response and reviews)
You’ve already played many memorable roles, so what are your future plans or goals?
Divya Khosla – I’d like to say this – when my last film Savi released, in every interview I was asked about my dream film. My answer was always the same: I want to do a good comedy film because I feel that’s my genre and I can do really well in it. That’s why I am very grateful to Umesh sir for giving me the chance to be part of a comedy film like Ek Chatur Naar. For me, this is a new and exciting genre. According to you, how was it working with Divya in terms of teamwork and performance?
Neil Nitin Mukesh – I must especially praise Divya ji. We’ve always seen her in glamorous roles, but in this film, she completely transformed herself. Her look, body language, and dialogue delivery were brilliant. Honestly, when I saw her first scene on the monitor, I was stunned. Breaking away from one’s image isn’t easy, but she did it gracefully, and that’s the strength of this film. Interestingly, before the shoot began, we met during Ganpati darshan, and I told her, “We should work together someday.” Soon after, that wish came true. Now I just hope the film turns into a blockbuster.
In terms of acting and direction, how significant is Ek Chatur Naar in your career?
Umesh Shukla – Ek Chatur Naar is very special for me because it’s quite different from my previous films in terms of genre. I had never attempted a thriller before, though I did perform in thriller plays in theatre like Ghulam Begum Badshah and Sher Cher. But in films, this is my first experience with the genre. Usually, when a film like Oh My God! or 102 Not Out becomes a hit, producers keep bringing you scripts in the same tone. But when this script came, I felt it was time to explore something new. In this film, I found a wonderful combination of humor and thrill, and when you have such a powerful cast and a brilliant team, working on it feels nothing short of a blessing.
