Jayaprakash Paswan divorce battle and pain

The story revolves around Jayaprakash Paswan, lovingly called Jay. Jay is a talented theatre artist, but his life has one big problem—his wife Janki’s wealthy family does not approve of him. Over time, even Janki finds it difficult to adjust to Jay’s middle-class lifestyle. She leaves him, takes their daughter along, and goes back to her father’s house. She wants a divorce. Jay’s biggest pain is that he cannot even meet his daughter every day.

This is where the story takes a unique turn. To stay close to his child, Jay disguises himself as an elderly woman and becomes Lakshmi Godbole—everyone’s beloved Chachi 420. As Chachi, he joins the same household as a nanny, the house where his daughter lives. What follows is a beautiful mix of laughter and emotion. There are moments that make you smile, and others that quietly fill your eyes. Eventually, Janki realises how much Jay loves her and understands that she is safest with her husband.

Kamal Haasan delivers a brilliant performance. Playing both Jay and Chachi, he is so natural that the audience forgets it is the same actor. Chachi’s body language, walk, voice, and subtle expressions are unforgettable even today.

Tabu played Janki with great sensitivity. This was the early phase of her career, and she handled the role with maturity beyond her years. Apart from Kamal Haasan and Tabu, the film featured a strong supporting cast including Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Johnny Walker, Paresh Rawal, Nassar, Ayesha Jhulka, Rajendra Nath Zutshi, Lakshmi Ratan, and Atul Agnihotri.

The music of 'Chachi 420' was composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, with lyrics by Gulzar. The soundtrack had six main songs, including two versions of “Jaago Gori,” along with popular tracks like “Chupdi Chachi,” “Bhaga Bhaga Sa,” and “Ek Woh Din.” The songs were sung by artistes such as Hariharan, Asha Bhosle, Aditya Narayan, Kamal Haasan, and baby Shruti Haasan.

Making this film was not easy. Kamal Haasan was not just the lead actor but also the director. The film was inspired by the Hollywood movie Mrs. Doubtfire, but Kamal Haasan gave it a completely Indian soul. He made sure the story felt rooted in Indian family values and emotions, rather than looking like a foreign copy.

Chachi’s makeup took several hours every day. Kamal Haasan had to wear heavy saris, a wig, and prosthetic makeup. Despite the heat and exhaustion during shooting, he never complained. Many times, children on the sets genuinely believed he was a real woman and addressed him as “Chachi” instead of “Uncle.”

An interesting fact is that the child actor who played Bharati initially did not realise that Jay and Chachi were the same person.

Many scenes in the film were improvised on set. Kamal Haasan often took new ideas from actors during rehearsals. Even while working with senior actors like Om Puri and Amrish Puri, he listened to suggestions with humility and included them in the film.

According to reports, the climax was originally more emotional, but it was softened keeping audience preferences in mind. The film’s title also went through several changes before Chachi 420 was finalised, as it sounded catchy and memorable.

Today, when we look back at Chachi 420, it doesn’t feel like just a comedy film. It is the story of a father’s helplessness, love, and how far he is willing to go for his child—even if society questions him. The film reminds us that a mother’s and a father’s love may be different, but both are equally important for a child.
