For the first time on Indian television, a show is coming that will portray the story of Shiva and Parvati and their family, not only from a mythological perspective but also highlighting emotional and human aspects. In this show, the role of Mahadev is played by Mohit Malik, and the role of Mata Parvati is played by Shrenu Parikh. Recently, Mayapuri magazine journalist Shilpa Nalamwar met them. During this interaction, both actors shared their experiences of living these divine yet challenging characters. Here’s what they said:

You have played many different roles, but how was it to portray such a divine and significant character like Shiva?

Mohit Malik: This is a role that chooses you; you don’t choose it yourself. It’s a divine intervention. In the beginning, I was hesitant about whether I should do it or not. But the show has fulfilled the promise it made. For the first time on television, viewers will see this kind of VFX, costumes, and presentation. Here, Shiva is shown not only in his divine form but also in a human form. He cries, laughs, and takes care of his children. His image emerges as an ideal father, husband, and lover. I feel there’s only one way to portray Shiva – to go within. Stay in that flow, and that flow itself is Shiva.

Portraying Parvati is very sensitive and challenging. How did you prepare for this role? What were you advised to focus on?

Shrenu Parikh: I always wondered what to do, how to do it, how to work on the character. Then Mohit and our director said, “Don’t do anything. Just be as you are. You are Prakriti.” Showrunner Aniruddh Pathak also said the same. Their appreciation was a huge compliment for me. Honestly, if I were in their place, I would never have taken this role. But Mohit showed courage, and I feel a new standard is going to be set through him.

Special: On Shrenu Parikh being chosen for the role of Parvati, Mohit said, “In the entire industry, I couldn’t see anyone else who could play Parvati. Casting took a lot of time, but as soon as Shrenu’s name came up, we thought – this is it. Purity and compassion are very rare in the industry, and Shrenu possesses these qualities. I only see these qualities in my wife, Aditi, not in anyone else. That’s why I believe she is the only one who can play Parvati.”

How is the Shiva–Parvati family portrayed in this story?

Shrenu Parikh: The story is being told from the perspective of their two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Kartikeya was born for a purpose, but right after birth, he was separated from his parents. The distance from the mother, the father’s helplessness – these are all emotions that everyone can relate to. Despite being a goddess, Parvati is a mother trying to connect with her son. Meanwhile, Shiva feels guilt over how to ease both of their pains. Therefore, viewers will see a very restrained and emotional relationship.

What would you say about the relationship between Shiva and Parvati?

Mohit Malik: Shiva and Parvati don’t try to change each other. Both have their own personalities. The biggest quality is that they don’t possess each other; they simply let each other be. They are involved in life but don’t indulge in it. That’s the lesson we can take into our own relationships.

How prepared are you for comparisons?

Shrenu Parikh: Comparisons will happen, but I take it in the right spirit. People will say good things and also offer criticism. I welcome both criticism and compliments.

Mohit Malik: I don’t go on social media and don’t read comments. I just have to do my work. This is my creativity, my presentation. Whether there will be comparisons or whether the show will succeed – that is not in our hands. For me, the most important thing is that I am enjoying myself while playing Shiva.

What message would you like to give to the viewers?

Shrenu Parikh: We have made this show with a lot of effort and love. Please watch our show starting October 6 at 8 PM on Sony SAB and Sony LIV, and let us know what you think.

Mohit Malik: From October 6 at 8 PM, watch our show ‘Gatha Shiv Parivar Ki: Ganesh Kartikeya’ on Sony SAB and Sony LIV.
