Where did the idea for ‘Singh Is Kinng’ come from?

During a session at the Jagran Film Festival, Anees Bazmee revealed that his blockbuster film Singh Is Kinng (2008), starring Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) and Katrina Kaif (Katrina Kaif), was originally inspired by Raj Kapoor’s (Raj Kapoor) classic film Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960).

Anees explained, “I was Raj Sahab’s assistant. There was a small theater at RK Studio (RK Studio) where his old films were shown. In the 1980s, I watched Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai. As soon as I watched it, the idea struck me that if I ever get a chance, I would make this story in a completely different way, in a commercial format. There were dacoits in that film, here we made them dons. But in both films, the main character was a simple, kind-hearted person.”

When the opportunity came, Anees gave Akshay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) the Sardar look. He added, “I went to meet Akshay in a studio, got him a turban, and clicked the first photo on my phone. He looked amazing in that look. That’s how the film was made!”

Scripts are written on set!

Anees Bazmee does not believe in bound scripts. He feels ideas can come from anywhere, and often the best punchlines and scenes occur on the set itself.

He shared a funny incident from the making of Welcome (Welcome - 2007): “Nana Patekar (Nana Patekar) used to complain that we actors also need preparation, don’t give us scenes at night. So, I secretly slipped the papers under his door at night, and the next morning would say – ‘I gave it to you, you were asleep, what can I do!’”

He also created the thriller Aankhen (Aankhen - 2002) in this style. Anees said, “There were only 15-20 days left to start shooting, and there was nothing on paper. We went to Hyderabad and wrote the entire film at night, shooting during the day. During outdoor shoots, I sleep for only an hour or so.”
