Released in theatres on 7 November, Haq has not only captured the audience’s attention but has also reaffirmed that Yami Gautam is among the finest actresses known for strong, content-rich performances. Following the film’s success, Yami appeared humble yet confident. In the film, which raises strong questions on women's rights in society, she has brought to life a character who does not fear raising her voice—even if it means going against the world.

Sharing the screen for the first time with Emraan Hashmi, Yami opened up about her emotions, preparation, challenges, and the overwhelming reactions she has been receiving from audiences. Here are some of the highlights from the conversation with Yami Gautam…

How happy and fulfilled do you feel with the phenomenal love and response ‘Haq’ is receiving? How do you absorb this warmth from the audience?

It feels wonderful. Honestly, I still can’t fully express how overwhelming this love and response are for me. For an artist, the biggest validation is when the audience appreciates you, accepts you, and showers you with genuine love. When a compliment truly comes from the heart, you can feel its warmth… and right now, that warmth is my biggest joy.

After the film’s release, fans have been constantly praising your performance. Was there any particular message that deeply touched or emotionally moved you?

There are so many messages that I can’t even begin to describe. Many people share personal thoughts about how the film made them feel. When the movie ends… and it stops being just a film and becomes an emotion — that’s when it earns its true place. I believe people are experiencing the same with Haq. I will always cherish this phase.

What is your process while portraying a character? How do you emotionally connect with your roles?

Playing a character isn’t just about acting — it’s an emotional journey. Holding onto that emotion is the real craft. I work deeply on my characters and think through every detail. Even at home, thoughts about the character come to me unexpectedly. And the moment something strikes me, I record a voice note immediately so that I don’t lose that feeling. This process keeps me closely connected to my roles.

With such a busy schedule, what activity or moment helps you recharge mentally and brings you peace?

When you're busy, you remain busy — that’s the truth. But while working, if I get a cup of tea along with any music playing in the background, I really enjoy that. And of course, whenever I spend time with my family, that is always the best feeling.

Your journey has been full of ups and downs, learning, and hard work. How do you look back at it today? And if you could give one piece of advice to the younger Yami, what would it be?

Some things make sense only when you reach a certain point in life. There’s no use explaining it beforehand. To be honest, I don’t have any specific thought in mind. I don’t even know where I see myself five years from now. Five years later, my goals might be entirely different — because five years ago, I had no idea I would be where I am today.
I believe in a higher power; I have immense faith in blessings. They’re always watching over you — just do your work with honesty. Some stories come with deep personal attachment, but learning to ‘let go’ is an art. It’s necessary, and understanding that comes only with time.
