Sanya Malhotra's Mrs. highlights the struggles and realities faced by women, and the film has resonated deeply with audiences, especially women who can relate to its portrayal. Following its release, Mrs. has sparked a wide discussion. Recently, Sanya and director Arati Kadav shared their thoughts in an interview, where they opened up about both their work and personal experiences.

Your film Mrs. has brilliantly showcased the image of women. Every woman can relate to the character in some way. Did you draw any inspiration from your family for this role?

Sanya:  Yes, I have seen many women around me go through these situations. I’ve seen my mother face similar circumstances. There were many times when people would say, "Housework isn’t real work, it’s just sitting around." It was so common. I’ve often seen my mom cook something, only for my dad to say, "I don’t want this, I want that." During parties at home, women ate last, after the men and children. These things have happened in my own home. Also, when I was growing up, I had a very close friend who went through something similar.

Your film has been shown at many film festivals. After watching Mrs., what kind of reactions did you receive from the audience? Could you share your experience?

Sanya:  When the film was screened in Melbourne, I wasn’t sure how the audience would react. But when I watched the film with the audience, I was pleasantly surprised. The reactions were amazing. There were scenes where I wondered how people would respond, but the audience responded positively to all those scenes. Many women were speaking to the film, commenting things like "Don’t do this to her." People were communicating with the movie. And the men who watched it said they had no idea about the small things that women go through. One uncle even said, "You’ve given men a good reality check."

In your film, the kitchen plays a significant role. Do you have any memories related to the kitchen that you’d like to share?

Sanya:  I have always loved cooking since childhood. Growing up, I would cook to impress my mom because she was often sick. I wanted to make her new and different dishes every day. That’s why I’m really good at making roti. Whenever my mom would come back from the hospital, I would think, "What should I cook for her?"

When making a film, there are often many questions in the mind of the creators. When you were making Mrs., did you have a particular image of a woman in your mind?

Arati:   Well, our film had a journey of its own. I made this film with a lot of love, sincerity, and confidence. It was a story where, after every scene, I could say, "This happened with my mom," or "This happened with my aunt," or "This happened with my bua." We spoke to many people about these issues, and that’s how we decided to make this film.

During the shooting of the film, was there any particular moment with Sanya that stays with you?

Arati: Yes, I remember one day when we were shooting in Chandigarh. Many girls came to meet Sanya, and it made me really happy to see so many people coming to meet her. That’s when I understood how important it is to have role models, and I saw that quality in Sanya.
