From December 20 to 24 this month, an exciting celebration of Indian cinema will take place in Russia. The festival will be hosted in Moscow and St. Petersburg, showcasing a variety of Indian films across different genres and styles. Organized by the Indian Embassy, Moscow, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre (JNCC), this event promises to be a vibrant showcase of India’s rich cinematic heritage.
Raj Kapoor's Centenary Celebrations
A highlight of the festival will be the commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of one of Indian cinema's most iconic filmmakers, Raj Kapoor. The festival will kick off with a tribute to Raj Kapoor, marking a century of his contributions to cinema. On this special occasion, Rahul Rawail’s book Raj Kapoor: The Master at Work will be launched in its Russian translation. In addition, Raj Kapoor's legendary film Awaara will be screened as part of the celebrations. These two events will serve as a heartfelt tribute to the great showman of Indian cinema.

Madhuri Kankanna Roy, the Director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre, Moscow, expressed her admiration for Raj Kapoor, saying, “Through this festival, we pay tribute to the legendary Raj Kapoor, who was not just an actor, director, and producer, but also the greatest showman and cultural ambassador of Indian cinema.”

Films to be Screened
The festival will feature a total of nine films, including the iconic Awaara, Gulmohar, In the Belly of a Tiger, Kadvi Hawa, Serious Men, Hotel Salvation, Gosta Eka Paithanichi, Malikapuram, and Ghamasan. Through this celebration, not only will Raj Kapoor’s legacy be honored, but it will also be an important step in promoting Indian cinema’s prestige and reach in Russia.
The festival will also see the participation of notable Indian film personalities such as Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Adil Hussain, Ranvir Shorey, Sudhir Mishra, Nila Madhab Panda, and Resul Pookutty, among others.
