As Tamil Nadu gears up for its legislative assembly elections in 2026, the political entry of South superstar Thalapathy Vijay is causing quite a stir. Reports suggest that the ruling DMK government is already alarmed by Vijay’s strategic preparations for the political battlefield. The fervor of his fanbase on social media, adamant about projecting him as the future Chief Minister, clearly signals that the South is preparing to witness yet another film star rise like a political comet. A political storm with a strong film industry presence seems to be brewing, with Superstar Vijay’s political party, TVK (Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam), rallying behind him as their CM face.

From Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar to Pan-India Star

Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, better known as "Vijay" in the South Indian film industry, is now a pan-India icon. His dubbed South Indian films often outperform Bollywood releases in terms of business. He has carved a unique identity across India. Some of his landmark Tamil films include Poove Unakkaga, Love Today, Khushi, Marshal, Master, and Beast. Vijay has acted in 68 films, many of which have been dubbed or remade in other Indian languages.

Why the Nervousness?

Tamil Nadu has a long tradition of film stars successfully transitioning into politics. Legendary names like C.N. Annadurai, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), N.T. Rama Rao (NTR), and Jayalalithaa have commanded immense public adoration. When South Indian stars step off the silver screen into the political arena, they often secure a permanent place in the public's heart. While Rajinikanth never fully embraced active politics and has now distanced himself from electoral politics, he still commands deep respect and even fear among political circles. Kamal Haasan, who launched his party MNM (Makkal Needhi Maiam), was quickly given a Rajya Sabha seat by the ruling DMK without delay. In contrast, Vijay is currently the brightest star in South Indian cinema and the highest-paid actor in the region. His immense popularity among the masses has understandably made several political parties nervous about his political foray.

Political Inclinations and the Race to Align With Vijay

Political Inclinations and the Race to Align With Vijay

Born to a film director father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, and a singer mother, Shobha, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar is not a sudden entrant into politics. After gaining major stardom with his 2007 film Pokkiri, Vijay started mingling with political circles. In 2011, he founded his fan club Makkal Iyakkam, which supported AIADMK in the state elections. In 2021, this club contested local body elections, winning 115 out of 169 seats — a performance that caught the attention of all political players. Vijay surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from films and then, in February 2024, launched his political party TVK, of which he is the president. At a recent party meeting, TVK declared Vijay as their Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2026 elections.

Chennai-  The Epicenter of Film and Politics

Chennai-  The Epicenter of Film and Politics

Chennai (formerly Madras), home to the South Indian film industry, has always played a central role in Tamil Nadu politics. Traditionally, the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) have dominated the political landscape. The Congress remains a distant third, while the BJP is aggressively trying to gain a foothold. Currently, DMK is in power under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, with support from Congress. The AIADMK and BJP are in opposition and are actively strategizing to topple the ruling coalition.

Both opposition parties — AIADMK and BJP — are attempting to align with Vijay’s party. Notably, the BJP has offered TVK a proposal to join forces and unseat the DMK government. AIADMK, too, has tried to woo Vijay. However, Vijay’s TVK is planning to contest elections independently. Thalapathy Vijay has boldly stated his stance: “No to BJP (at the Centre), and No to Stalin (in the State),” making his anti-establishment position clear. Even if TVK does not reach the 118-seat mark needed to form a majority government, political surveys suggest that either the ruling or opposition camps will inevitably require Vijay’s support to form the government.

Only time will tell whether this rising political star from the cinematic soil of the South will go on to occupy the Chief Minister's seat like MGR, NTR, or Jayalalithaa once did.
