Kailash Kher Birthday Special: When it comes to voices that have added a spiritual, soulful depth to Indian music, Kailash Kher stands in a league of his own. His journey from a modest background to becoming a global voice is not just inspiring, it’s deeply moving. On his birthday, July 7, we revisit his life, career, and untold stories that make him a true musical icon.
Early Life: Born into Music and Spirituality
Kailash Kher was born on July 7, 1973, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Pandit Meeta Lal Kher, was a temple priest and a folk singer, who became his first musical influence. Even as a child, Kailash was drawn more toward folk, Sufi, and devotional music than traditional classical genres.
In his teenage years, driven by passion and dreams, he left home and moved to Delhi to pursue music—marking the start of an incredibly tough journey.
Kailash Kher’s Struggle That Shaped His Soul
In Delhi, life was harsh. Kailash faced poverty, slept hungry, and often had no place to stay. He learned music under classical teachers like Pandit Gauri Shankar and did odd jobs—giving tuition, and selling handicrafts—to survive.
At one point, a business failure pushed him into depression, and he even contemplated suicide. But music pulled him back from the edge, becoming his healing force and life purpose.
Rise in Mumbai: The Song That Changed Everything
In 2001, Kailash moved to Mumbai where he began singing for advertising jingles for brands like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Citibank. However, fame came in 2003 with the song "Allah Ke Bande" from the movie Andaaz. The song became an instant hit and catapulted him to national stardom.
Kailasa: A Band That Rewrote Sufi Fusion
In 2004, he founded his band Kailasa, which blended Sufi, folk, and rock music into a unique, modern sound. The band delivered major hits like:
Teri Deewani
Saiyaan
Chaak Lein De
Their music resonates with both the young and the old, offering depth, melody, and meaning.
Interesting Facts: From Vaishno Devi to Rahman’s Studio
Kailash once revealed he got the tune for “Teri Deewani” while singing bhajans during a Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.
He was so nervous during his first meeting with A.R. Rahman that he couldn’t sing and forgot the lyrics. Rahman calmed him down and motivated him to perform.
