Following Do Patti, Bollywood actress Kajol is all set to appear in the mythological horror film Maa. On Thursday, May 29, the trailer of Maa was launched. At the trailer launch event, Kajol appeared in a plain black saree paired with a sleeveless beige blouse with heavy work. Her look seemed inspired by the appearance of Goddess Kali. Her husband and Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn, along with their son Yug, also attended the event. Ajay looked dashing in a maroon shirt and black pants. Also spotted at the event was Maddy, a.k.a. R. Madhavan, who sported an all-black look.
"Everyone will be scared stiff" – Kajol
The event began with R. Madhavan, who recited a dialogue from his film Shaitaan with Ajay Devgn. Afterwards, Kajol, Ajay Devgn, and director Vishal Furia came on stage. Kajol stated, “I will scare you all so much with this film… so much that everyone will be left shaken.”
When asked by a journalist how challenging it was to play the role of a mother and whether the character reflected her real-life maternal instincts, Kajol replied, “Being a parent is a very natural feeling. You do many things without learning or being taught. As soon as you have a child, you instinctively protect and pull them close — it all happens naturally. We tried to bring that same emotion to the screen. A mother is not just a symbol of sacrifice; she also stands up to protect her child. Nothing is scarier than a ‘mama bear’.”
Thoughts on 8-hour Work Shifts
During the event, Kajol and Ajay Devgn shared their views on the 8-hour shift regulation. Ajay said that honest filmmakers should have no problem with the rule, while Kajol appreciated the idea of finishing work in less time. She said, “I like the fact that you can work for a shorter duration.”
Ajay added, “It’s not like people dislike the idea. Many understand it. Most honest filmmakers won’t have any issues with it. Apart from new mothers working 8-hour shifts, many others have also started working in shifts. I believe it varies person-to-person, and most people in the industry understand it.”
Director Vishal Furia’s Comments
During the press meet, director Vishal Furia remarked, “In our country, not much work has been done in horror films regarding VFX and prosthetics, but lately, we’ve seen some great efforts. Our film is one of them.”
Question from Mayapuri Journalist
Entertainment magazine Mayapuri's journalist Shilpa Patil asked how the idea for the film came about. Kajol responded that while films typically take time to come together, this project — including casting and scripting — took only three months.
“In my view, everything happened very quickly. As soon as we had the idea for the film, we started working on it immediately,” she said.
When Maa was compared to Shaitaan, Ajay Devgn commented, “It’s unfair to compare two films. But we’ve put our best efforts into this movie, and we’ll continue giving our best. Let’s see what happens next.”
On AI in Cinema
When asked about the use of AI, the team associated with the film said that if AI is used correctly, it can be your friend, not your enemy. “We are currently running several tests on it,” they shared.
Directed by Vishal Furia and written by Saiwyn Quadras, Maa stars Kajol alongside Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherrin Sharma. Presented by Jio Studios and Devgn Films, Maa is produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande, with Kumar Mangat Pathak as the co-producer. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on June 27.
