Karan Johar at Dhadak 2 Trailer Launch: “I’ve Never Feared Speaking My Mind”

Karan Johar at Dhadak 2 Trailer Launch: The much-awaited trailer of Dharma Productions’ upcoming film Dhadak 2 was launched on Friday, July 11. Lead actors Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, along with producers Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and director Shazia Iqbal were present at the event.

The trailer of Dhadak 2, the sequel to the 2018 film Dhadak starring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, was unveiled amidst much anticipation. The new film features an intense love story between Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri and marks the directorial debut of Shazia Iqbal.

At the launch, Triptii arrived in a white outfit looking ethereal, while Siddhant sported a white T-shirt with blue jeans and a multicolor jacket, exuding charm. Karan Johar, too, made a stylish appearance in all-black attire paired with matching jeans.

Karan Johar on Caste and Censorship

When asked if caste is still a prevalent issue and whether filmmakers fear censorship when tackling such sensitive topics, Karan Johar responded, “Dharma Productions has always been known for a certain kind of cinema, but we’ve consciously tried to evolve. We’ve handled many subjects with sensitivity, and Dhadak 2 was no different.

This was a subject that needed to be addressed, and I truly believe that art is where change begins. Cinema is a powerful medium—if we, as storytellers and content creators, don't raise such topics, then who will? Yes, it’s a mainstream film—an intense love story—but with a very important message.”

On dealing with the censor board, Karan added: “I’ve never held back from speaking my truth due to fear of consequences. Sure, concerns exist, but that’s exactly what holds an artist back. I believe the best way to communicate a message is through art. Yes, it took some time to bring this film to theatres, but the censor board showed great empathy and truly understood our intent.

They respected the sensitivity, and so did we. It takes time—it doesn’t happen overnight. That’s why the certification process exists. We respected it and took our time. We’re proud of the final product because it stayed true to our vision. 

This story will shake you, move you, and make you think—and it reflects the reality of our times, no matter where you live.” He also confirmed that although there were minor censor interventions, they did not compromise the essence or impact of the film.

Karan’s new slimmer avatar has been a topic of online buzz. Responding to a journalist’s compliment on his look, he smiled and said: “There’s no secret. I read some wild things online—people were saying things like ‘What’s wrong with Karan Johar?’ or ‘Is he seriously ill?’ Let me clarify: I’m perfectly healthy. I feel lighter, both physically and mentally, and I’ve embraced wellness. That’s why I lost weight. Yes, I’m alive and well! I plan to live a long life—especially for my kids. And these amazing people sitting beside me are like my children too. I still have so many stories to tell on screen.”

Triptii Dimri on Her Challenging Role

Triptii shared her experience of working on Dhadak 2 and praised director Shazia Iqbal: “I’ve always wanted to play characters that challenge me. Right from the beginning of my career, I wished to be part of meaningful films—and I have been lucky. Dhadak 2 is not just another story—it’s very special. The role was deeply challenging, and I’m proud to be a part of this film. I believe audiences will understand its depth when they watch it in theatres.”

Siddhant Chaturvedi on Finding His Story

Siddhant Chaturvedi spoke passionately about how Dhadak 2 aligned with his roots: “Most of my previous films were urban, but I come from a small town like Ballia. That background has always been within me, but I never got a story that resonated with it—until now. When Karan sir called me to listen to the story, I immediately said yes after hearing the script from Shazia and Rahul. What followed was a journey where Shazia’s direction and Triptii’s support made everything flow naturally. We had an incredible vibe on set—it felt like going back to college. By the end, I felt completely emptied out. That’s how deeply I had connected with the character. As an actor, that kind of emotional investment is fulfilling. I hope people can feel that when they watch the film.”

Shazia Iqbal on Making Her First Feature Film

Debutant director Shazia Iqbal shared the unique way she got the opportunity to direct: “It was all thanks to Somna Mishra, who liked my short film Bebaak and shared it with Karan. I think this is the first time someone has offered a big feature film based solely on a 20-minute short! Full credit goes to Somna and Karan for trusting me. Normally, women directors are expected to make a certain kind of film, but Dharma never imposed any such limitations on me.

The honesty and depth you saw in the trailer—that’s thanks to Siddhant and Triptii. Everyone who’s seen the film says the same thing: every character feels real, every face belongs to that world. That’s the biggest compliment a filmmaker can receive.”

About the Film

Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, is set for theatrical release on August 1, 2025. Also featuring seasoned actors Ashish Chaudhary and Vipin Sharma, the film explores themes of love, caste, identity, and power dynamics.

Directed by Shazia Iqbal and inspired by the critically acclaimed Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, Dhadak 2 offers an intense love story woven with deep-rooted social commentary, making it a powerful addition to the Dhadak franchise.
