If you have ever wondered how Bollywood's 'Khiladi' Akshay Kumar looks so fit, energetic and young even at the age of 57, the answer is not magic or a secret potion. It is pure discipline, love for natural living and a strong dislike for anything that comes in shiny packets on store shelves. He says, "This convenience of getting packed and ready-made food at home with just one call or click prevents you from cooking at home, the convenience of getting a car at your doorstep prevents you from walking outside, and the convenience of getting everything delivered at your doorstep with just one click or call prevents you from leaving the house. And all these restrictions make you extremely lazy, obese and sick in body and mind, so one should say 'no' to unnecessary conveniences.
Akshay Kumar's lifestyle is not like the remote-style routine of a superhero. While many Bollywood stars go to sleep after partying till dawn, Akshay's time to wake up is at four in the morning.
Despite having several vehicles, he walks and runs a lot in the morning, kicks the bike and eats home-cooked food before most of us press the snooze button.
Just imagine, every morning, when the city is still in bed, Akshay is already awake. He wakes up by 4:00 or 4:30 in the morning. Unlike most people, he doesn't just wake up and scroll through his phone or have a cup of tea lazily. He gets straight into action, starting his day with a two-hour workout. This is not your regular gym session with fancy machines and selfies. Akshay prefers the basics like running outside, jogging, skipping with heavy chains or swimming with weights tied to his body. He believes in using his body weight for exercise. He focuses on strength, flexibility and core stability. He jokes, "Machines are for factories, not fitness".
Martial arts has been a big part of his life. He doesn't practice it just for film roles. It's his way of staying fit, both mentally and physically. Kickboxing, taekwondo and boxing exercises are a regular part of his routine. He says martial arts teaches him discipline, self-control and the ability to handle stress. It's not just about fighting in a film scene. It's about developing a mind that doesn't panic and a body that doesn't give up easily.
But Akshay's fitness is not just about sweating it out and building muscles. He is a great believer in yoga. For him, yoga is the secret to staying calm and focused. It helps him recover from intense workouts and keeps his mind at peace. He often says, 'A fit body needs a fit mind' and yoga is the way for him to keep both in tip-top shape.
What about food? Akshay is almost old-school here. He doesn't eat outside food, no matter how tempting it is. He avoids processed food, packaged snacks and anything made in a lab. If it doesn't grow on earth, he won't eat it. His meals are simple, homemade and natural. Breakfast can be a bowl of fresh fruit, a glass of warm water and whole-wheat parathas. Lunch is usually dal, sabzi, roti and yogurt. Dinner is always before 7 pm and very light, maybe soup, vegetables or egg whites. If he feels hungry after that, he eats raw carrots, sprouted moong, channa ka tomato, onion, amchur ka chaat, salad or a bowl of soup, but never anything heavy.
He doesn't believe in protein shakes or supplements. He says, 'Nature gives us everything we need.' So, he gets protein from dal, paneer and eggs, carbs from roti and rice and vitamins from fruits and vegetables. He eats everything, but only if it is natural and unprocessed. He believes that eating a variety of foods in their most natural state is the best way to get all the nutrients the body needs.
Akshay's day is planned according to his health. He goes to sleep by 9 pm, never later. He says, 'Sleep is your best friend if you want to stay fit.' He believes that muscles repair and grow when you sleep, so he never compromises on sleep. He even schedules his meetings and shoots in the morning, so he doesn't have to break his routine. He jokes that he is the only actor who asks directors to finish shooting before sunset because he wants to go to bed on time.
He also stresses on the importance of mental health. For him, fitness is not just about looking good or having abs. It is about feeling good from the inside. He regularly practices meditation, spends time in nature and avoids stress as much as possible. “The healthiest person is the happiest person, not the person with the biggest muscles,” he says. He doesn’t put pressure on himself to look a certain way or act like everyone else. He listens to his body and does what feels right to him.
Akshay doesn’t like to sit still. He believes that being lazy is the enemy of good health. “The more you move, the more you live,” he says. Even on vacations, he finds ways to stay active – cycling, playing volleyball, trekking or running with his kids. He believes fitness should be fun, not a punishment. If you enjoy what you do, you will never get bored or give up.
His advice to everyone seems simple: get up early, move your body, eat natural foods, sleep well, and don’t take too much stress. He often says, 'Don't wait for Monday or the New Year to start. Start now, make do with what you have, and keep going.' He believes that anyone can stay fit, no matter their age or background, as long as they are consistent and disciplined.
Akshay's lifestyle is proof that you don't need expensive gyms, fancy diets, or magic pills to stay healthy. All you need is a little discipline, a lot of common sense and a willingness to put your health first. He may be a super-super-star on screen, but off screen, he is a common man who loves his morning walks, his home-cooked meals.
