Everyone is familiar with Moses Fernandez through his work and the films he has contributed to. On screen, his action sequences and stunt choreography leave the audience awestruck, yet in his personal life, he is a simple and humble person. When film producer-director Sanjay Niranjan introduces me to him at the Café Coffee Day in Meera Tower, I am amazed to realize that this is the same down-to-earth man who has given action to films like Gandhi, Paan Singh Tomar, Holiday, and Hindi Medium! When it comes to stunt specialization in the film industry, Moses Fernandez ‘name is always remembered. His latest release, Bombay, has been generating a lot of buzz, and its promo is currently a topic of discussion.
"How did you get into films? And how did you end up directing action for big film stars?" Moses reflects, "Honestly, I never really thought about it." He recalls his journey with nostalgia, adding, "No one in my family was connected to films, but I always enjoyed doing something special. Running on top of a moving train, hanging from one side and dropping to the other side – these stunts fascinated me. I loved watching films with action, and I trained in martial arts. I earned all the best belts in martial arts. Then I thought, why not make this my profession?"
Moses' Journey from Assistant to International Action Expert
Moses got his first break as an assistant on Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. "It was my first film, and it was an international film where I did the action." He remembers, "Although their technical expert team came from abroad, they appreciated my work. I often explained action techniques to them using Indian methods." After this, Moses got several opportunities to work on international films, including The Far Pavilions, The Jungle Book, The Perfect Murder, and Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra.
In the Hindi and South Indian film industries, Moses Fernandez has worked on over a hundred films and has choreographed stunts for nearly every major star. He has worked on almost all of director Abbas-Mustan's thriller films, including Baadshah, Soldier, Ajnabee, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Humraaz, Tarzan, Aitraaz, and many more. He has also been involved in Rajshri Productions' Vivah and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, as well as Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, and Prabhudeva’s Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Moses has worked with AR Murugadoss on Holiday, Nitesh Tiwari on Bhootnath 2, and many other notable films like Criminal Justice 1 and 2, Maya 3, Hindi Medium, U-Turn, Chases, 1920, Chhatrapati, Khilone, and several others.
Moses Fernandes’ journey is filled with interesting anecdotes. "If I mention one, the others will complain that I didn’t mention them," he laughs. "But what I want to say is, the praise that stars get for their stunts on screen belongs to our fighters and stuntmen. We work for days on a fight sequence, often enduring injuries to complete the scene. We have done the most dangerous stunts for stars, even acting as their duplicates. I’ve been injured countless times, stabbed with knives… but this is our profession. We don’t need to talk about it or tarnish anyone's image. We don’t say how brave or how scared a star is," he adds with a smile. "This is a profession for men with a brave heart, and it’s our stunts that earn the stars their applause."
Moses is known for his unique style in action sequences. He is considered a specialist in fight choreography. Whether it’s Indian wrestling, lathi fight, swordplay, samurai combat, fencing, boxing, kickboxing, vehicle chases, explosions, or hand-to-hand and gun combat, he is the director’s first choice. His recent release, Bombay, is an action-thriller film where his distinctive action sequences will be on full display.
