Actor-director Rishab Shetty and actress Rukmini Vasanth’s film Kantara Chapter 1 is soon going to hit the theaters. Recently, Rishab Shetty attended a press conference related to the film, where he not only spoke about the project but also answered questions from journalists. Let’s find out what he shared…

Rishab Shetty Kantara Chapter 1 is the story of his roots

During the press conference of Kantara Chapter 1, Rishab Shetty spoke candidly about the film, language, and his journey. He said that this is not just a film, but a story of his village and traditions, which he is taking to the world through cinema.

Rishab said: “I always think in Kannada. But because of giving interviews continuously, I am getting used to speaking Hindi. Learning any language is enjoyable, and when we speak in the local language, people feel respected—that’s why I try. Sometimes it backfires—why did you speak this language here, and another one there? But I feel proud to be a Kannadiga, and I love my language deeply. At the same time, I respect all other Indian languages equally.”

On Dubbing His Own Voice in Hindi

When asked about lending his own voice for the Hindi version this time, he replied: “Last time I didn’t really understand what was going on. I had only gone for two days, when the film was being released in Karnataka. Translating it into another language in such a short span was difficult. This time, I worked hard and gave my own voice, so that the soul of the story doesn’t get ‘lost in translation.’ This experience has been a learning process for me.”

On Research for the Story

Speaking about working with historians and professors in the research process of Kantara Chapter 1, he said: “Since this is a prequel, we had to take references from the past. We researched paintings, plays, and historical novels of that period. We focused a lot on kings, kingdoms, and tribal communities. This helped us layer the story and screenplay more effectively.”

On the Roots of Kantara

Explaining the essence of Kantara, Rishab said: “Initially, the story wasn’t that big. But as it developed, elements of farming, tribal life, and their beliefs naturally became a part of it. In Karnataka’s coastal regions, the deity and belief system we depicted in the film are deeply connected with the people. This wasn’t intentional—it just flowed naturally with the story.”

On Challenges of Acting and Directing

Talking about the challenge of handling both direction and acting, he shared: “For me, it feels like a flow. I think doing both together is easier because if another director was there, it would be difficult to fully adopt his vision. But when I direct myself, both the character and the vision align. My team’s contribution is huge, especially my DOP, whose visual and lighting sense is extraordinary. I always say he will be one of the greatest DOPs in Indian cinema in the future.”

On His Experience While Making the Film

When asked about his experience of working on the film for such a long time, Rishab said: “Every day felt new for me. Kantara is as special to me as my very first film. Every artist and every technician has been like a teacher. Despite the difficult weather and challenging days, this entire experience has been like a blessing.”

On Future Parts of the Story

Regarding whether the story will continue beyond this film or end here, he responded: “Whenever a story is completed, it opens new doors. Then the question arises—should we go forward or backward? Kantara Chapter 1 is part of that same journey. What happens next will be decided by time and the story itself.”

Kantara Chapter 1 will hit the theaters on October 2, where it is set for a box office clash with Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.
