Kaalidhar Laapata: Abhishek Bachchan Returns
Having won hearts with his versatile roles in films like Yuva, Guru, Paa, Manmarziyaan, and Bob Biswas, Abhishek Bachchan is now back with Kaalidhar Laapata, which is set to premiere on ZEE5 on July 4. The film is directed by Madhumita Sundararaman, known for her acclaimed Tamil film KD (Karuppu Durai). In a recent conversation with the media, Abhishek and Madhumita shared insights into the emotional world of the film, the process of building such layered characters, and how their experiences shaped the story. Let’s dive in...
- Before playing a mysterious and emotional character like Kaalidhar, how did you prepare yourself mentally and emotionally?
Abhishek- Honestly, I didn’t have to put in too much extra effort because Madhumita had already crafted the script so beautifully. I would show up on time, memorize my lines, and leave the rest to her. With rehearsals, we naturally immersed ourselves into our characters.
- How special was it for you to be part of such a sensitive story? What touched your heart the most?
Abhishek- What stood out to me was the bond between Kaalidhar and Ballu. Despite the huge age and size gap, there's an equal relationship between them. Kaalidhar doesn’t treat Ballu like a child, and Ballu doesn’t see him as just an elder. It’s a beautiful friendship—that’s what touched me most deeply.
- The child actor Daivik Baghela is winning hearts with his performance. What was your experience working with him?
Abhishek- That child is truly exceptional! His innocence and natural acting moved me several times. Every scene with him had such truth and depth. Working with him was one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences I’ve had.
- The film has several emotional scenes. Was there any particular moment that overwhelmed you while filming or one that still lingers in your memory?
Abhishek- Yes—there was one scene where my character gets humiliated by his younger brothers, despite giving up everything for them. We were shooting in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, around 2-3 am in freezing cold. I was literally shivering. But I gave my shot anyway, and everyone said, ‘Wow sir, what a performance!’
- You share the screen with several talented actors in the film. How was the experience of working with such a strong supporting cast?
Abhishek- The supporting cast plays a huge role in grounding the film in realism. Actors like Vishwanath Chatterjee and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub brought so much authenticity to their roles that it really helped immerse the audience in the world we were building.
- Kaalidhar’s story is a deeply emotional journey wrapped in simplicity. How did you approach building this character?
Madhumita- For me, the most important thing was for Kaalidhar to feel completely real and honest. Since the story itself is simple, there was no room for artificiality. The core of the film is the unique bond between Kaalidhar and Ballu, so I tried to keep everything as natural and grounded as possible.
- What inspired you to make such an emotional and sensitive film like Kaalidhar Laapata? Was there a personal experience behind it?
Madhumita- When we decided to make it in Hindi, the producers at M.A. Productions offered their support. Initially, I wanted to make it in Tamil, but concepts like the Kumbh Mela don’t really fit into South Indian culture, so Hindi felt like a more organic choice. Hindi isn’t my mother tongue, but Vibhuti, Amitosh, and the whole team helped me with dialogue and local flavor.
- The emotional song ‘Hans Ke Jaane De’ carries a lot of weight. What emotions were you feeling while creating it?
Madhumita- Over the past few years, I’ve learned one key lesson—Let it go. That line actually came from my 8-year-old niece who was singing the Frozen song. That’s the sentiment of the film too—when Kaalidhar has to say goodbye to Ballu. It’s an act of selfless love.
Kaalidhar Laapata, starring Abhishek Bachchan, tells the story of a mysterious man who suddenly disappears. The film also features 8-year-old Daivik Baghela in a pivotal role.
