Last week, a shocking piece of news made headlines world-renowned composer A.R. Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have reportedly filed for divorce after 29 years of marriage. With three grown-up children and a seemingly successful marital life, many are left wondering: how could such a solid relationship crumble so suddenly? What went wrong under that long-standing shelter of family life? This question has been on everyone’s mind.

However, the same day this news broke, another startling update surfaced. Mohini Day, the beautiful bassist from Rahman’s music band, also filed for divorce from her husband, saxophonist Mark Hartshorn. People couldn't help but draw connections between the two divorces, though they were separate cases. In hushed tones, whispers spread that beautiful music often comes from beautiful inspiration. People speculated that Rahman’s music, like his famous song Chaiyya Chaiyya, could also have been inspired by someone special. Rahman, however, remained silent amidst these rumors and speculations. To this day, he continues to keep quiet. Meanwhile, Rahman’s children have repeatedly asked the public to respect their privacy and dignity. Despite these requests, several captivating images of Mohini Day began circulating on social media, fueling the gossip even further. In response, Rahman issued a notice demanding that such rumors and content be taken down from YouTube and other platforms.

Saira Banu Clears Rumors

Now, Saira Banu, Rahman’s wife, is adding a new tone to the entire separation saga. She insists that she does not want her famous husband’s reputation to be tarnished. She has categorically denied all rumors linking Rahman’s name to any extramarital affairs. According to her, the reason for their separation is purely health-related. She reveals that she has not been in Chennai for the past two months, as she is undergoing treatment, and is now staying in Mumbai. Saira Banu says that people had been questioning her absence from Chennai, which led to misconceptions about their relationship. She decided to stay away from Rahman for the time being so that she could focus on her health and not be a hindrance to his work. She also clarified that Rahman is a “gem,” a highly talented and respected individual and that no gossip should be spread about him.

Despite the claims of health-related separation, many still find it hard to digest the fact that after 29 years of marriage—during which they celebrated major milestones like winning an Oscar, a Grammy Award, and numerous other prestigious music accolades—Rahman and his wife are now living apart. This separation is happening in the backdrop of a wife’s illness, yet they are taking the legal route to end their marriage. Fans of Rahman are struggling to understand the situation.

One question that remains is whether their three children also understand the reality of this decision. After all, it was they who recently appealed to social media, asking the public to respect their parents' privacy amid this difficult time. Saira Banu, who refers to Rahman as a "gem" (ratna), now finds herself in a situation where her "gem" of a husband is creating music while living apart from her due to her illness.

For now, the tune has certainly changed for Saira.
