Talented actor Rajkummar Rao and Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar are in the spotlight these days for their upcoming film ‘Maalik’. The film’s trailer is receiving a strong response. In a recent interaction, the duo shared their thoughts on various aspects—Rajkummar spoke about playing one of his most non-glam roles and his experience working on the film, while Manushi discussed how the fame from winning Miss World helped her acting journey, but also came with its own challenges. Let’s find out what they had to say…
Rajkummar, the final scene in the trailer has left a powerful impact. What was the process behind it?
Rajkummar: That scene is one of the most emotional and dramatic parts of the film. Initially, we had planned to shoot it differently, but once we reached the set, director Pulkit decided to change it. He said, "No, we won’t do it that way." What we eventually shot was based on a new idea that came up then—and I’m glad we went with it. It led to a long and impactful sequence in the film.
How easy or difficult was it to enter films after winning Miss World?
Manushi: Getting the first project might have been easier because of the popularity, but there were challenges too. People don’t see you as ‘new’—they already have high expectations. Years of preparation for Miss World go unnoticed, but every attempt in films is out in the open for all to see.
How different and challenging was this role for you career-wise?
Rajkummar: I didn’t take up the role to break any image. It was an interesting character, the script was strong, and working with a director like Pulkit was an opportunity I couldn’t pass. I always want freshness in my work. Maalik was a chance to challenge myself.
Manushi, how challenging was this role for someone who was once Miss World?
Manushi: The world of Maalik is very real, and to make a Miss World fit into that world, the character of Shalini was crafted in a grounded way. I worked on understanding the language, body language, and the atmosphere. The world of gangsters and guns was new to me, so I had to prepare extensively with the director.
Is Maalik a completely fictional story?
Rajkummar: Yes, absolutely. It’s a story born entirely out of Pulkit’s imagination. There’s no direct reference.
The dialogue “Agar Maalik paida nahi hue to kya, ban to sakte hain” (So what if you're not born a boss, you can become one) is powerful. How much do you relate to it?
Rajkummar: A lot! This line is not just about a gangster—it’s our story too. For those of us who come from small towns and grow up with limited resources, it’s inspiring. It says that with hard work, anything is possible.
Manushi: I could relate deeply too. I’ve always believed that our mindset, hard work, and intentions shape our destiny. This line reflects that belief.
Who is your OG ‘Maalik’ (true boss)?
Rajkummar: If there’s anyone who’s truly my Maalik in life, it’s my parents, my wife Patralekhaa, and God.
Manushi: For me, it’s myself. My family and friends have always encouraged me to make my own decisions.
If not from Maalik, which gangster character from Indian cinema would you choose to play?
Rajkummar: I would choose Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (played by Amitabh Bachchan) from Agneepath.
If given a chance, which character would you love to portray on screen?
Manushi: If I ever get the opportunity, I’d love to play Paro from Devdas. That role is very close to my heart.
Can Maalik be watched with family?
Rajkummar: Absolutely! If your kids are mature, they should definitely watch it. It has emotions, drama, and stories of a father-son, husband-wife, and friendship. There’s no use of abusive language.
Who is your favorite actress in the film industry?
Manushi: I really admire Priyanka Chopra.
Maalik is a crime-drama film set to release in cinemas on 11th July 2025. The film is produced by Kumar Taurani under the banner of Tips Films.
