Rajkummar Rao on His Character

Rajkummar Rao on His Character

At the trailer launch of ‘Maalik’, Rajkummar Rao spoke about his role, saying: “This is the first time I am playing such a powerful character. It truly inspired me as an actor and gave me the opportunity to explore a deeper, more intense side. Playing a layered, ruthless gangster was both thrilling and challenging — and that’s what makes it so exciting. I can’t wait for audiences to experience the serious, engaging world we’ve created.”

He also spoke about the dialogue from ‘Maalik’ — “Pehda nahi hua toh kya, Malik ban sakte hain” (If you weren’t born one, can you still become a Malik?)
He said: “It’s not just me — everyone can relate to this. Because 99.9% of us aren’t born with a silver spoon. We all have the potential to become something, even if we weren’t born into it. This isn’t just a dialogue from ‘Maalik’, it’s for all of us — for anyone who wants to make something of their life.”

Manushi also opened up about her role, “‘Maalik’ is truly special for me. It’s my first collaboration with such a talented team — Rajkummar and director Pulkit — and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I got to play a character I’ve never portrayed before, and the film gave me a chance to enter a world that is raw, intense, and serious. It’s been a very exciting journey, and I hope audiences connect with it.”
When asked during the trailer launch whether she really learned how to knead dough for her “Malik”, Manushi laughed and said: “He’s not just my Malik — he’s everyone’s Malik! My character Shalini (in the film) does a lot of work, but in real life, I don’t do that much! Honestly, I didn’t have to learn much, but the character had to do all those things.”

Working with Manushi: Talking about working with Manushi, Rajkummar said: “Manushi’s face aligns perfectly with Indian culture. She’s from Haryana, yet her command over Hindi is impressive — and that’s not easy. Also, when you see her in the role of Shalini in this film, you’ll be amazed by her performance.”

When Saurabh Shukla Conducted a Workshop

Veteran actor Saurabh Shukla shared his excitement about being part of the film. He said: “I once went to FTII for a week-long workshop, but Rajkummar wasn’t there at the time. Still, I’m very happy that I got the chance to work with him through this film. I was even happier when I saw my friend Swanand Kirkire on set — I’m working with an army of talented artists now. For an actor, there’s nothing more exciting than working with excellent co-actors. Even if you miss a beat, the other will carry the moment.”

On the Evolution of the Action Genre

When asked about the evolution of the action genre — from the rawness of Satya to the stylishness of Pushpa, KGF, Animal, and now Maalik — Saurabh Shukla responded: “I believe everything keeps evolving — the world evolves. I’ll share a small anecdote. I came into the industry around 1993. Back then, films followed a formula. Satya broke that formula. It was said that scripts should be written a certain way. But today, in the times we’re living in, I had a producer come up to me and say, ‘Saurabh bhai, write something — like they used to write back in the day.’”
He emphasized that today’s commercial action cinema is no longer just about loud stunts and stylized violence — it now embraces realism, layered characters, and artistic nuance.

Prosenjit Chatterjee Speaks

When asked why he chose this film, Prosenjit Chatterjee said: “Honestly, it was the script that drew me in. Pulkit had a clear vision, and the character he had written will be a surprise even for the Bengali audience. I felt it was a challenge worth taking.” He also expressed excitement about the upcoming Sourav Ganguly biopic, being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, with Rajkummar Rao in the lead role.

Director Pulkit

Pulkit, making his cinematic debut with ‘Maalik’, said: “I feel proud to share the trailer of this film. It has been a remarkable journey. The story promises to take audiences on a gripping and emotional ride. We’ve poured our hearts into this, and I truly hope the audience finds it as meaningful and compelling as we imagined. I’m eagerly awaiting its release.”
