Yesteryear Bollywood evergreen matinee-idol actor Biswajeet has been discreetly directing and shooting for a patriotic Hindi movie, “as a tribute to Indian revolutionary freedom-fighters and martys" where his real-life actress-dancer daughter Prima Chatterjee is playing a striking major role.

Although he was being blemished in the (mostly digital) media for his sensational ‘forced’ kissing scene with Rekha in this 1969 movie ‘Anjana Safar’ (later re-titled as ‘Do Shikari’ ), the veteran handsome actor Biswajeet-Da had maintained a dignified silence..Reluctant to react, as Biswajeet felt ‘it was relating to a scene that was shot over 55 years ago’. After being prodded, the retro-classic ‘Bees Saal Baad’ hero ( Biswajeet)  gave vent to his version.  “All this is being falsely insinuated against me. First of all, it was director Raja Nawathe who had conceived that scene and had briefed me and Rekha-ji, in advance.

Secondly, if you observe the ‘working still’ and that scene in the movie, it is self-explanatory. There is no attempt whatsoever to prevent me or push me away. Considering it was a bold scene, during that era, maybe she felt quite self-conscious, in the presence of the unit-crew,” recalls actor-director-singer Biswajeet who despite his 85 plus years of age, is still passionate about his craft. Known for his romantic lead roles  in musical jubilee-hit retro movies such as ‘Kohraa’, ‘Do Kaliyaan’, ‘Mere Sanam’, ‘Main Sunder Hoon’ , ‘April Fool’ and of course ‘Kismat’ where he set a trend of being a ‘drag queen’ even as he dances to the naughty number ‘Kajraa Mohabbatwala’, mild-mannered Biswajeet-da emphasizes that Rekha ‘continued to work with him’.

GuestKahtey Hain Mujhko Raja

Counters the veteran star-actor, “Had she been upset with me, she would have stopped signing films opposite me. ‘After that movie ‘Do Shikari’ released,  Rekha acted opposite me in ‘Mehmaan’ , then in ‘Do Aankhen’ . When I produced and directed ‘Kehte Hain Mujhko Raja’ (1975),  she readily consented to be cast romantically opposite me. Even today, whenever she meets me at the airport or at film events,  she fondly calls me ‘Bishu-baba’ and  greets me. We share this mutual respect for each other, which no one can jeopardize. Although her movie with Navin Nishchol ( ‘Saawan Bhaadon’) released first,  because our film release was delayed, technically I am her first co-star hero in Hindi cinema. Even when she started off in my film, she was so enthusiastic and professional that I had recommended her name to my buddy-directors Mohan Sehgal and Hrishi-da. It’s a matter of pride for me that Rekha-jee has finally emerged a legendary evergreen actress-diva,” Biswajeet signs off.
