In a moving social media post shared alongside a poster of the original film, Shekhar Kapur reflected on the journey that brought him back to this beloved story and the deeply personal themes at its core.

Shekhar Kapur’s New Film Explores Identity & Home

“This film is about Home and Identity,” Shekhar Kapur wrote. “And it’s taken me ten years to craft a story as simple as the original, yet overflowing with emotion and hidden subtext.” The sequel, he says, has been shaped by his own lifelong search for identity, a theme that veteran actress Shabana Azmi, who starred in the 1983 classic, also highlighted in a recent interview. “Shekhar has been obsessed with the idea of identity as long as I’ve known him,” she said.

During a recent narration to close filmmaker friends, he recalls, “ the first narration of ‘Masoom- the next generation’ to filmmakers I trust .. everyone had tears in their eyes .. including, embarrassingly, .. me !” As he returns to the director’s chair, Shekhar Kapur asks for blessings, to carve out truth through simplicity, and to once again explore the depths of emotion through the lens of family, home, and identity.

With Masoom – The Next Generation, Shekhar Kapur offers more than just a sequel, he presents a soulful alternate of a story that has touched hearts for decades. A Padma Bhushan awardee and visionary filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur now embarks on this new chapter with his daughter, Kaveri Kapur, who takes on a pivotal role in the film.
