Shekhar Kapur Says, “No Need for Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan”

Renowned filmmaker and Padma Shri awardee Shekhar Kapur — who has directed acclaimed films like Masoom (1983), Mr. India (1987), Bandit Queen (1994), and Elizabeth (1998) — made a major statement about AI at a recent event.

Highlighting the strength of Artificial Intelligence, he said that he doesn't need megastars like Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan anymore. Instead, he would use AI to create his own characters and stars — over which he would hold the copyright.

Speaking at WAVES 2025, as cited by The Free Press Journal, Shekhar Kapur shared his vision for the future, stating that AI will eventually create stars who appear just like humans. He explained how AI won’t just generate actors but will create entire stars.

He said, “Actors will remain actors, but in the future, AI will create stars. AI will mostly generate human-like stars, and I can create one using AI — and I’ll hold the copyright. Very soon, you’ll see film ideas featuring a girl or a boy, a man or a woman, created entirely by AI, and I’ll own the copyright to them.”

I Will Create My Own Stars

He further added, “This is happening more and more now. Many influential figures you see today aren’t real people — they’ve been created by AI. So why can’t we make films with such AI-generated actors or characters who become stars? I don’t need Amitabh Bachchan — I can create my own character. I don’t need Shah Rukh Khan — I’ll make my own, and if I’m good at it, I’ll create one that audiences will love.”

From Aspiring Actor to Visionary Director

For those unaware, Shekhar Kapur did not initially enter the film industry to become a director — he actually aspired to be an actor. He made his film debut in his uncle Dev Anand’s film Ishq Ishq Ishq, which was produced, directed, and starred Dev Anand himself. However, despite this launch, his acting career didn’t take off. Instead, he became a well-known model and later transitioned into film direction, where he found great success.
