Sooraj Pancholi Comeback with Kesari Veer: After a four-year hiatus, actor Sooraj Pancholi is making his comeback to the silver screen with the film Kesari Veer. In a recent interview, Sooraj opened up about his struggles, the unwavering support from his family, the realities of social media, and the invaluable lessons he has learned from industry veterans.
Kesari Veer: Sooraj Pancholi’s Powerful Comeback
- After a four-year break, you're returning to the big screen with Kesari Veer. How does it feel to be back, especially after going through such a tough phase in your life?
Sooraj Pancholi: It was extremely difficult. It took twelve years for my life to get back on track. My entire twenties were consumed by that dark period. I wouldn’t wish what I went through on even my worst enemy. But now, I want to work, be part of good films—not just showcase my physique but also prove my acting talent.
- Being away from acting for so long must have been personally and professionally painful. How did you deal with that?
Sooraj: It’s like they say—if you tie down a horse, it falls ill. A horse is meant to run. That period was very tough. But my biggest support system was my family—my mother, my sister, and of course, my father. They always told me: "Sooraj, never give up. You've never done wrong to anyone, so nothing wrong will happen to you. Your hard work since childhood will pay off. Just stay committed." That motivation from them is what kept me going. The Sooraj you saw in Hero is a better version today. Without my family, I don't know where I would be.
- In Kesari Veer, you play Hamirji Gohil. What kind of preparation did the role require?
Sooraj: It was a very challenging role. I spent a lot of time with the producers, the director, and the entire team to truly understand who Hamirji Gohil was—a warrior who gave his life protecting the Somnath Temple from invaders. Learning about him made me a devotee of Lord Shiva. I also trained in sword fighting. I already knew horse riding from childhood, but bringing this character to life required much more.
- Your father Aditya Pancholi is an actor, and your mother Zarina Wahab has decades of experience in the film industry. What advice has your mother given you that still guides you today?
Sooraj: My mother has been in the industry for over 40 years, yet she's not at all filmy. From her, I’ve learned that your film life and your personal life are separate—and she has balanced them beautifully. I want to view life in a neutral way. I don’t want to be so obsessed with work that I forget to live. I don’t want to become obsessive about success or failure. When it comes to acting, my mom always says, "Do it your way."
- Early in your career, you had the support of Salman Khan. Now you’ve worked with Suniel Shetty. What has this journey been like, and what did you learn from these veterans?
Sooraj: I consider myself very lucky to have worked with such big stars. If Suniel Shetty sir, wasn’t a part of this film, it wouldn't have been made. He’s the real hero of Kesari Veer. I wouldn’t be wrong in calling him the foundation of our film. I thank Lord Shiva for giving me the opportunity to work with him. He’s an amazing co-star—watching his agility during action scenes was truly inspiring.
- Any memorable moment from the shooting of Kesari Veer?
Sooraj: Absolutely. Every day before shooting began, we used to chant "Har Har Mahadev!" and ended the day the same way. Just like the line "All is well" from the movie 3 Idiots, "Har Har Mahadev" became our version of that. It gave us immense power and strength.
- In today’s digital age, a short clip can go viral instantly. How do you navigate the fast pace and pressure of social media as an actor?
Sooraj: That’s true. At a recent trailer launch, someone pointed out how earlier actors were rarely seen, and that made them feel like stars in the sky. But now, with a single swipe on your phone, every actor is accessible—and that’s reduced their value. I wasn’t active on social media for a long time. Now, with the film coming up, my team handles the promotional posts. But I believe social media will reach a saturation point. Audiences are smart now—they can tell what’s fake or paid and what’s real.
Sooraj Pancholi starrer Kesari Veer is set to release in theaters on May 16, 2025. The film is produced under the banners of Panorama Studios and Chauhan Studios.
