In a special gesture, Kher invited each of them onstage, introducing them to the media and honoring their work. Fashion highlights included Shubhangi in a white dress, Pallavi in a brown saree, Karan in black, and Jackie and Anupam in smart coat-and-suit ensembles.

Anupam Kher on the Inspiration

Kher shared the deeply personal inspiration behind Tanvi The Great: “Twenty-three years ago, I directed Om Jai Jagdish, but that wasn’t my story. I resolved that my next film would come from the heart.” He recalled a moment from his niece Tanvi’s life, captured four years ago during a family wedding in Gurugram—though she was autistic, she quietly gazed at the mountains. When asked what she was looking at, she replied, “I’m looking at my world.” That simple yet profound statement sparked the idea for the film.

Universal Appeal

When asked whether the film’s international praise proves its universality, Kher said, “Box office matters, but we premiered it abroad so its appreciation would resonate here. It’s not just an autism story—it’s about hope, kindness, and love, lessons learned from an autistic person.”

The Writers’ Journey

Explaining how the three writers came together, he said, “I wanted autism to be portrayed as a superpower. Abhishek had written Unchai with me, and Ankur joined after Kagaz 2. We crafted the story of a girl from an army family who joins the military against stereotypes, after discovering the truth behind her father’s heroic death. We spent 55 days filming in Lansdowne in a cantonment. Every evening, we played Damsaraj, shared meals, and stayed together—like family. As Ingmar Bergman said, ‘The love of the unit shows on screen.’ That love is evident in our film.”

Tribute to M.M. Keeravani

Kher expressed gratitude to music director M.M. Keeravani for attending despite his father’s ill health, highlighting the deep bonds within the production team.

On Keiko Nakahara

Kher shared an emotional anecdote about DOP Keiko Nakahara: he pursued her for months—she was initially busy in Japan. As shooting approached, he left three missed calls in one day. When she finally answered, curious about the story, he explained that the film presents autism as a superpower. She immediately agreed—logging on to the project. She later revealed that her three-month-old son had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and the story gave her hope, prompting her to join wholeheartedly.

Jackie Shroff’s Reaction

Jackie Shroff praised Kher, saying, “Thank you, Anupam sir, for casting me. Hearing the film’s song for the first time brought tears to my eyes. I rarely cry, but that song moved me. It is an honor to share the stage with such talented actors.” He added, “If anyone wants to learn acting, they should learn from Anupam Kher. This film is truly soul-cleansing.” Jackie plays Brigadier Joshi in the film.

Shubhangi Dutt on Her Debut

On portraying a character from the autistic community, Shubhangi said, “This is not just an opportunity; it feels like my second birth. It was a dream come true. I thank God, my family, and Anupam sir for believing in me and training me through ‘Actor Prepare.’” Asked if she expected to be recognized as Tanvi, she smiled, “I used to imagine when my time on screen would come. I was initially scared to perform alongside such big names, but Anupam sir asked, ‘What’s the film called?’ I said, ‘Tanvi The Great.’ He said, ‘Then go own it.’ And I did.”

Karan Tacker on His Debut

Karan Tacker shared his excitement and nerves: “I’ve worked in this industry for 16 years, but every release still makes me nervous. Seeing the trailer and poster with Anupam sir, Boman sir, Naseer sir, and Jackie dada, I felt I’d done something worthwhile. On day one, Anupam sir told me, ‘Everything else will fall in place, you just work with me.’ And I’m glad I did.”

Pallavi Joshi on Cannes

Pallavi Joshi reflected on the Cannes experience: “We weren’t nervous at Cannes because we didn’t have lines to memorize—we were there like a family.”

Tanvi The Great is scheduled to release in theaters on July 18, 2025. Directed by Anupam Kher, the film marks the Bollywood debut of Shubhangi Dutt and stars Boman Irani, Pallavi Joshi, Arvind Swami, Ian Glenn, Naseeruddin Shah, and Karan Tacker. The musical score is composed by Oscar-winner M.M. Keeravani.
