Naya Din Naya Raat is one of those rare Bollywood films that tell the story of life and the many facets of emotions it goes through. Even after 50 years, it remains an example of creative storytelling and brilliant acting in Indian cinema. The message of the film, that life is made up of many emotions, and each emotion is important, still rings true and significant today. Naya Din Naya Raat is one of those rare Bollywood films that continue to arouse curiosity even after 50 years, highlighted by Sanjeev Kumar's unforgettable performance and Jaya Bhaduri's heart-warming performance.
Released in 1974, the film was directed by A. Bhimsingh and is a remake of the 1964 Tamil film Navarathri. The Hindi version featured Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri (now Jaya Bachchan) in the lead roles. Sanjeev Kumar plays nine different characters, each representing one of the nine "navrasas" or emotions that are considered central to Indian art and life: wonder, fear, pity, anger, devotion, disgust, love, bravery, and joy.
The story is about Sushma, a young woman who runs away from home because her stubborn father (Om Prakash) is forcing her into marriage against her will. After running away from home, as she ventures out into the world, she encounters nine different men, each with a different story, a different personality and a different temperament. The nine characters played by Sanjeev Kumar each show a different side of human emotion and experience. For example, Sushma meets a lonely widower with a lovely daughter. Then she encounters a drunkard in a brothel. Then she meets a psychiatrist who admits her into a mental hospital. Then she meets a dreaded bandit, and then a priest who is actually a smuggler in secret. Sushma also meets a leper who was once rich. She meets a stage actor too who is a transvestite, and then a hunter who once saves her from a lion. Each man she meets changes Sushma from within, with her learning something new about herself and the world. And then her life takes a surprising turn when she meets the ninth man who changes Sushma forever. Apart from Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri, the cast includes Farida Jalal, Nazneen, David, Shyama, Lalita Pawar, Tun Tun and Manorama.
The music of the film was composed by the famous duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal with lyrics by Rajendra Krishan. The team created songs that were perfect for every mood. The songs were sung by legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, and Asha Bhosle. Tracks like 'Didi Teri Shadi Dekhna', 'Krishna Krishna Bolo Krishna, Radhe Radhe Krishna Krishna', 'Ek Paheli Tumse Poochhun', 'Main Wahi, Wahi Baat', and 'Sanam Na Jao Abhi' are still remembered by fans
There are some interesting behind-the-scenes stories about this film. The lead role in this film was first offered to the legendary Dilip Kumar, but he refused it, saying that Sanjeev Kumar should be signed instead. This suggestion by Dilip Kumarproved to be a turning point in Sanjeev Kumar's career, as his performance in nine roles is still considered one of the best in Hindi cinema. He portrayed the spirit of nine different men so well that people still remember his performance in this film as a masterpiece. He worked closely with his makeup and costume teams for days, sometimes spending seven hours to get ready for each new character. It is said that he would also practice different moves and voices, so that every person Sushma met would look completely new.
The 1974 film 'Naya Din Nayi Raat' is inspired by many emotions of life.
Jaya Bhaduri is still remembered for the sensitivity and honesty of her performance as Sushma. She was already a big star, but this film brought out her potential as an actress.
Director A. Bhimsingh was known for his sensitive storytelling skills, and he ensured that each story in Sushma's life felt real and meaningful. Cinematography by G. Vittal Rao and editing by A. Paul Durai Singham helped keep the film tight and engaging despite its episodic structure.
A lesser-known fact about this film is that the film's approach of showing nine emotions through one actor was very rare at that time. Making such an offbeat film was a huge risk in those days, but the risk paid off handsomely.
Sanjeev Kumar's dedication was so intense that he reportedly spent hours getting into the skin of each character, changing his look, voice and body language for each role. The makeup team and costume designers also had to work extra hard to ensure that he looked different each time.
Another lesser-known fact is that the film was shot on a limited schedule and a very low budget. The team didn't even have the luxury of retakes or expensive sets, so everyone had to be at their best at all times to get the shot right in one take. This sentiment really helped the film, giving it an honest, raw feel that still holds up today.
While shooting for the film, Sanjeev Kumar was literally attacked by a lion.
