It seems that the Hindi film industry has been struck by some sort of bad luck this year, or perhaps it's fallen victim to a "bad eye." If we exclude a few films, there hasn’t been a single movie this year that has delivered significant business to its makers. Aside from a few hits like Stree 2, Kalki 2898 AD, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and Singham Again, there hasn’t been any film that can be called a major box-office success.
Box Office Collections
Looking at the box office collections, Stree 2 grossed 627.02 crore domestically, with 289.38 crore coming from Hindi-language earnings. Similarly, Kalki 2898 AD raked in 640.63 crore in India, with 289.38 crore in Hindi. Released during Diwali, Singham Again achieved a total net collection of 241.50 crore in 26 days. However, it is still 133.50 crore short of its 375 crore budget. On the other hand, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, which also performed well in the domestic market, crossed 271 crore at the box office.
Industry insiders predict that Hindi films' total box-office collection this year will be 30-40% lower than 2023, as despite numerous releases, most films have flopped, even those starring big stars. Let's take a look at the films that contributed to the current state of the box office.
Big Stars, Bigger Flops...
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan
Released on April 11, this action film starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff had a massive budget of 350 crore, but it could only manage 66 crore at the box office. This turned out to be one of the biggest flops of the year.
Maidaan
Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan was also released on April 11, with a budget over 250 crore. However, it earned only 51.44 crore, making it another box-office failure.
Surfirra
Released on July 12, Surfirra, starring Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan, had a budget of 100 crore but grossed only 32 crore.
Crack
Arjun Rampal and Vidyut Jammwal's film Crack, made on a budget of 80 crore, was a major flop, earning just 12.6 crore.
Yodha
Yodha, starring Sidharth Malhotra and produced by Dharma Productions, was released on March 15, 2024. Made on a budget of 66 crore, the film could only manage 33 crore, another failure.
Merry Christmas
Featuring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, Merry Christmas was released on January 12 with a 60 crore budget. However, it grossed only 12 crore, failing to even recover half its budget.
Veda
Released on August 15, Veda, starring John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh, was made on a 60 crore budget but could only bring in 25.93 crore.
Jigra
Alia Bhatt’s Jigra, despite controversies and a budget of 80 crore, earned a meager 23.60 crore at the box office. This marked a major flop for Alia’s film.
Khel Khel Mein
Released on August 15, Khel Khel Mein starred Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Amy Virk, and Fardeen Khan. With a 95 crore budget, it could only manage 54.8 crore globally, making it a box-office disaster.
Indian 2
Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated Indian 2 became one of the biggest disappointments of the year. With a massive budget of 250 crore, it could only earn 81.32 crore across all languages in India.
The Buckingham Murders
Kareena Kapoor's The Buckingham Murders was released with a ₹40 crore budget, but it earned a mere 7.53 crore, adding to the list of major flops.
Uljh
Released on August 2, Uljh, starring Janhvi Kapoor, could only rake in ₹11 crore, marking it as another flop.
Celebrating Small Successes Amid Big Failures
Despite the dismal state of the industry, Bollywood seems unwilling to accept the reality. Every weekend, after the release of a film, the box-office collection is glorified. Films that are expected to open with ₹10 crore, celebrate even ₹5 crore as a success. Even a film that earns ₹50 crore instead of ₹100 crore throws a success party. And when films like Stree 2 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 manage to stay afloat, the celebrations last for days.
We would advise the Hindi film industry to take a cue from the South Indian film industry. Focus on telling good, engaging stories, and you'll attract a loyal audience and better business.
