Exactly 44 years ago, in 1981, a film made a remarkable entry into Hindi cinema — one that is still remembered in golden letters in the history of Indian film. The film was the musical drama Umrao Jaan, directed by Muzaffar Ali and starring the legendary actress Rekha in the lead. Along with Rekha, the cast included Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Shaukat Kaifi, Dina Pathak, Prema Narayan, Bharat Bhushan, Mukri, and Satish Shah.
Umrao Jaan Ada: A Tragic Tale of Lost Innocence
The movie is based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s 1899 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada. It tells the story of a courtesan in Lucknow named Umrao Jaan, who was known as 'Ameeran' in her childhood before a tragic incident led her into the world of prostitution.
Now, after all these years, this iconic film has been re-released in theatres. The grand special screening held at Jio World Drive, BKC saw the presence of Rekha herself and many big names from the Bollywood industry. Here’s a look at the major celebrities who attended the event.
Rekha
At the re-release event of Umrao Jaan, Rekha looked breathtaking in a golden and white Anarkali suit, paired with heavy golden jewellery, a potli bag, red lipstick and nail paint, and a classic bun. Her look was widely appreciated, and her presence won everyone’s hearts.
Alia Bhatt Channels Rekha’s Silsila Look
Alia Bhatt arrived at the screening wearing a pink saree, flaunting a look reminiscent of Rekha’s in the film Silsila. She sported soft makeup, and her entire ensemble was styled by renowned stylist Rhea Kapoor.
Janhvi Kapoor
Janhvi Kapoor too channeled an Umrao Jaan-inspired look. She wore a heart-shaped Anarkali suit with makeup similar to that of Rekha's character in the film.
Muzaffar Ali
The film’s director, Muzaffar Ali, also graced the screening with his presence.
A. R. Rahman
Renowned music composer A. R. Rahman attended the re-release event dressed in a western-style sherwani. He also posed for a selfie with Rekha.
Tabu
Actress Tabu was also present at the re-release event. Her bond with Rekha was truly heartwarming — they hugged each other tightly. Tabu wore a stunning red lehenga for the occasion.
Hema Malini Brings Grace
The ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini looked regal in a traditional Banarasi saree at the event.
Nushrratt Bharuccha
Nushrratt wore an Anarkali suit resembling Rekha’s outfit from Umrao Jaan. Fans loved her ethnic look, and she also clicked several pictures with Rekha.

Anil Kapoor appeared in a royal yet simple look. During the event, Rekha even shared a dance move with him, delighting everyone.

Veteran actress Tanuja attended the event with her daughter Tanisha Mukerji (Kajol's sister). The mother-daughter duo wore traditional sarees.
Asha Bhosle and Zanai
Legendary singer Asha Bhosle attended the event with her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle. Asha sang the classic song Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Aap Meri Jaan Lijiye from the film, which was warmly received by the audience.
Raj Babbar, Kabir Bedi & Jeetendra
Veteran actors Raj Babbar, Kabir Bedi, and Jeetendra were seen cheering for Rekha. Raj Babbar played an important role in the original film.

Let us tell you that Umrao Jaan has officially re-released in theatres on June 27. Originally released in 1981, this iconic film is now available in a remastered 4K version, 44 years later.
