In the world of Bollywood, there are a few franchises that carve a permanent place in the audience’s heart with their unique style and consistent dose of entertainment. ‘Housefull’ is one such franchise that, since its inception, has delivered laughter, chaos, and a double shot of humor to its viewers.

The latest installment, Housefull 5, released on June 6, 2025, promises more laughter and madness. However, unlike its early charm, questions are now being raised on the franchise’s creative direction.

The original Housefull (2010) and Housefull 2 (2012) were family-friendly comedies. They thrived on situational humor without relying heavily on vulgar or double-meaning dialogues. Characters like “Aarush,” played by Akshay Kumar, brought laughter through bad luck and awkward situations, not sleazy lines. These films were clean enough for all age groups – from children to the elderly – to watch together and enjoy.

Directed by Sajid Khan, Housefull 2 built on the success of the first film, with a bigger cast including Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, John Abraham, and Abhishek Bachchan. The story revolved around four men caught in a web of lies and relationships, resulting in hilarious misunderstandings. Once again, the humor felt wholesome.

But over time, both the audience and the humor evolved – or rather, devolved. Housefull 3 (2016) and Housefull 4 (2019) relied more and more on double entendres and dialogues that were borderline inappropriate for family viewing. Characters like “Aakhri Pasta” (played by Chunky Pandey) started delivering lines such as “Mere paas do hain, tumhare paas kitne hain?” – a joke with a double meaning, making it awkward to watch with parents or children.

In Housefull 4, Akshay’s character says to another older character, “Dekh liya,” in a scene layered with sexual innuendo. Another line reads, “Yeh love triangle nahi, love pentagon hai!” – lines that often land more awkwardly than humorously. The increasing use of innuendo has shifted the franchise's humor from clever to cringeworthy.

Now, Housefull 5 brings with it an overwhelming ensemble cast – Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Dino Morea, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangda Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Soundarya Sharma, Chunky Pandey, and Johnny Lever. But the question remains – can this mega cast deliver smart humor? Or will we once again be subjected to overused slapstick, vulgar jokes, and a script that winks more than it entertains?

Earlier, humor emerged from well-crafted situations. Today, it seems to stem from the lowest common denominator of writing. What was once family cinema now invites comments like, “Mummy, this scene feels weird.” The very idea of comedy has shifted – and not always for the better. The audience for a franchise like Housefull is still largely middle-class families – parents, kids, grandparents. But can they still watch it together?

The power of comedy lies in its ability to connect people, to lift spirits without crossing boundaries. There is still hope that Housefull 5 can return to its roots – to the innocent laughter it once promised. Otherwise, what we might get is not comedy, but a forced package of vulgarity in the name of entertainment – one that may push the audience further away from theatres.

Let’s just hope the makers remember: good comedy never needs to be crude to be funny.
