There’s a lot of buzz these days around the film Sardaar Ji 3 starring Diljit Dosanjh. The reason for the heightened spotlight, however, is the Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, who is playing the female lead. Although the film is not releasing in India, it is set to hit screens overseas and in Pakistan on June 27. While the Indian release is stalled due to a ban, the Pakistani censor board has approved it for release there.

Hania Aamir Sparks Bollywood Debate Over Casting

The film has triggered a divide in Bollywood. Some celebrities like Puneet Issar, Mika Singh, and Guru Randhawa are protesting against the movie because it features a Pakistani actress. On the other hand, celebrities like Rakhi Sawant are supporting Hania Aamir and speaking up in her favor. So, who exactly is Hania Aamir?

Hania Aamir is a superstar in the Pakistani film and television industry. She is one of the highest-paid actresses in Pakistan and enjoys a massive fan base. She also has one of the strongest followings on social media among Pakistani celebrities. She gained international attention during the Pulwama attack controversy when Indian authorities banned Pakistani artists and locked their social media accounts in India. During that time, one of Hania’s Instagram messages—appealing to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the decision—went viral in Pakistan and abroad. However, Hania later claimed that her message was misrepresented and taken out of context.

Born in Rawalpindi, Punjab (Pakistan), the 28-year-old actress has achieved stardom comparable to Indian stars like Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt. She is a well-known face in films, TV shows, and drama serials. Hania rose to immense popularity in 2022 with drama series like Mere Humsafar and Kabhi Hum Kabhi Tum. Her romantic film Ishqiya was also a major hit. She began her film career in 2016 with the comedy Janaan, although her television debut is considered to be the series Titli. Her 2018 war film Parwaaz Hai Junoon also brought her into the limelight. She is known for her performances in the comedy Na Maloom Afraad 2 and the romantic drama Anaa as well.

Apart from acting, Hania is also the brand ambassador for several major companies. She was ranked 9th in the 2024 list of Top 50 Asian Celebrities. She has won three Hum Awards, two PISA Awards, and an IPPA Award. She has also received five nominations for the Lux Style Awards.

Hailing from a Punjabi family, Hania is known for her charming persona. She stands at 5 feet 2 inches and is praised for fitting into a variety of roles. Her Punjabi background is one of the reasons she was selected for Sardaar Ji 3. Diljit Dosanjh has stated that when the Pulwama incident occurred, the film had already been completed; otherwise, he wouldn’t have supported casting a Pakistani actress. Many of the Punjabi artists in the film believe that the controversy surrounding the Pakistani actress has overshadowed the film, resulting in its Indian release being blocked.

The film also stars Neeru Bajwa, another leading actress of Punjabi cinema. Neeru has alleged that due to Hania Aamir, she received less attention during the film’s promotion.

Whatever the case, the opposition to the film in India appears justified for now. While Hania Aamir has certainly gained publicity through this film, the reality remains that her identity as a Pakistani artist is the reason her image won’t be seen in Indian cinemas — a consequence she must bear.
