Currently, there is a lot of buzz around Ajay Devgn's film Azaad, which is set to release on January 17. In this film, Ajay Devgn shares the screen with his nephew, Aman Devgn, who plays the lead role. Alongside Aman, Raveena Tandon’s daughter, Rasha Thadani, is making her debut on screen. Whether it's the teaser or the promotional events, Ajay has consistently downplayed his own role and has instead focused on promoting his nephew, Aman.

Ajay Devgn's Debut & Hema Malini’s Niece: A Starry Start

This brings to mind an incident from many years ago when Ajay Devgn was shooting for his debut film Phool Aur Kaante. The scene was being filmed in a large park in South Mumbai, and the film's PRO, Raju Karia, had called me up saying, “Hey, there’s a new film with a new boy and girl. They’re making their debut, want to cover them? I’ve already informed a few other journalists.” He mentioned that the boy was Veeru Devgn's son and the girl was Hema Malini’s niece. Given Hema Malini's prominence at the time, it was expected that her niece would soon become a star, so several journalists had gathered at the set.

When I arrived at the set, I noticed that Veeru Devgn, the fight master, was sitting on a chair some distance away from the cameras, dressed in white clothes. The person sitting with him called me over, and I went to join them. That person was Sudarshan Ratan, a close friend of Veeru Ji and a film director. Even though Veeru Ji was a renowned fight master, he exuded such civility, decency, and warmth that anyone meeting him would instantly feel at home.

While I spent time with Veeru Ji, having tea and chatting, I noticed that all the other journalists and photographers were gathered around the new girl, Madhuri, taking photos and asking questions. They believed that because she was Hema Malini’s niece, she was destined to be a star. On the other hand, the hero of the film, the new boy—Ajay—was sitting quietly on a chair, away from the crowd. But Veeru Ji, like a proud father, called out to us, “Talk to him too, he’s my son, the hero of the film.” He called out to the boy. However, I insisted, “No, no, don’t call him, we’re coming to him.” I went over to Ajay and called over a few other journalists (Chhaya Mehta, Jyoti Vaishnav, S.K. Pandey, K. Saroj, etc.), and we all started talking to the new hero of the film. Despite the situation, Ajay remained composed and didn’t show any impatience or discomfort about being neglected in favor of the girl.

None of us could have predicted that this quiet, humble young man, who spoke little but whose eyes spoke volumes, would one day become one of the biggest stars in Bollywood under the name Ajay Devgn. Although an interview with Ajay had already been published in an English magazine, according to PRO Raju Karia, it was our team that first published an interview with him.

Today, when Ajay Devgn promotes his new film Azaad  and talks about his nephew Aman Devgn, it reminds me of how, during the promotion of his first film Phool Aur Kaante, his father, Veeru Devgn, proudly said, “He’s my son.” Now, Ajay, while promoting Aman, says, “He’s not like my son... he is my son.” Indeed, this is how stars are born.
