It was a wonderful brief inspiring MasterClass session with versatile creative genius director-writer-lyricist Oscar Academy Award winning Gulzar-saab interacting with star-moderator-host Subhash Ghai WWI Academy at Film City ( Mumbai) !
Reciting his favorite couplets Ghalib sher-shaayri, the erudite Gulzar-saab appreciated perhaps the "first-time creative initiative" by visionary 'showman' Subhash Ghai of having a workshop masterclass on " Celebrating Poetry and Music in Indian Cinema". Supported in his media-interactions by illustrious versatile theatre and literary personality and his close friend Salim Arif ( NSD Alumnus), the articulate yet candid Gulzar-saab advised the aspiring lyrics-writer excited students of Whistling Woods International (WWI).
Said Gulzar-saab, " As compared to writing personal poems, writing lyrics and poetry for Hindi film songs is not at all easy. One has to start slow and steady from the roots and then aim at the peak. And one should not start directly from the peak. Also while writing film-based lyrics, one has to keep in mind, the story, the character, the situation, the mood, the lyrical meter, the mukhda-antara-blend, the visuals.. If the song-audio has meaningful evergreen lyrics, set to a catchy tune that resonate with each next generation with different interpretations. it will possible become immortal and timeless over multiple decades," explained Gulzar-saab amidst applause and cheering.
It should be interesting for Readers to know that some 55 years ago, legendary director-actor Guru Dutt's younger visionary director brother Atmaram launched Subhash Ghai as an 'upcoming actor' in multi-starrer Umang ( 1970) and Gulzar-saab was the "Writer' for that same film !!.
