Aside from acting, M.R. Radha is also remembered for an unfortunate incident in which his fellow actor M.R. Radha almost killed him. This incident occurred on January 13, 1967, just a day before the release of M.G.R.'s film Thaikku Thalaimagan. It was also a time when M.G.R. was campaigning for his political party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
MG Ramachandran and M.R. Radha's Shocking Showdown
According to reports, M.R. Radha, along with producer K.K. Vasu, visited M.G.R.'s house. In Vasu's film Petralathan Pillaiya, M.G.R. played the lead role, and M.R. Radha portrayed the antagonist, which was a box-office hit. Vasu decided to repeat this successful hero-villain combination in a second film. To discuss this, he and M.R. Radha visited M.G.R.'s residence at St. Thomas Mount, where they were warmly welcomed. They were conversing and having a good time when suddenly a heated argument broke out between M.R. Radha and M.G.R. The dispute escalated when M.R. Radha accused M.G.R. of deliberately attempting to ruin his career and stood up angrily to leave. In a shocking turn of events, M.R. Radha pulled out a revolver hidden in his dhoti and shot M.G.R. at point-blank range.
The Bullet That Struck M.G.R.'s Neck
M.G. Ramachandran was shot in the neck and the lower part of his left ear. Vasu was in a state of shock due to this sudden turn of events, but he quickly regained his composure and lunged at M.R. Radha. He tried to prevent him from firing another shot, but M.R. Radha managed to break free from his grasp and shot himself twice.
M.R. Radha Sentenced to 7 Years of Imprisonment
Both actors were rushed to the government hospital in Royapettah for immediate treatment of their gunshot wounds and later transferred to the General Hospital in Madras. After emergency surgery by the doctors, both were declared out of danger. P. Lakshmanan, the Sessions Judge of Madras, sentenced M.R. Radha to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to murder M.G. Ramachandran.
