Usha Uthup: From Nightclub Singer to Legendary Icon

Usha Uthup was born in Madras in 1947, the same year when the country got its independence. You will be surprised to know that despite being such a big singer, there was a time when Usha Uthup used to sing in nightclubs and hotels. Let us tell you that for the first time, Usha started singing in a small nightclub named James located on Mount Road in Chennai. This continued for a long time.

After that Usha Uthup came to Mumbai and started singing in nightclubs like 'Talk of the Town' and 'Trincas' in Calcutta. After some time Usha went to Delhi where she sang at the Oberoi Hotel. According to reports, Usha Uthup met Shashi Kapoor in this hotel. Shashi Kapoor was so impressed with Usha's voice that he gave Usha her first chance to sing in a film.

After this, Usha sang an English song in the 1970 film 'Bombay Talkies and then for the film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. In the film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', Usha was supposed to sing 'Dum Maro Dum' with Asha Bhosle but due to some reason, it could not happen. After this, Uthup sang a few lines in English in the song 'Dum Maro Dum'.

Then in 1970, Usha sang an English song in the film 'Bombay Talkies' and then for the film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. In this film, Usha sang the hit song Dum Maro Dum with Asha Bhosle. In this song, Usha also sang a few lines in English.

Moving forward in her career, Usha recorded an English pop song called 'Greenback Dollar' by a group called 'Jambalaya and The Kingston Trio' in 1968. After this, Usha stayed in London for a long time. After returning, new doors opened for Usha and she sang many songs with RD Burman and Bappi Lahiri.

Usha sang many hit songs in Hindi films like Shalimar, Shaan, Waradakat, Pyara Dushman, Armaan, Daud, Disco Dancer, Bhoot, Joggers Park and Hattrick, for which she received a lot of praise. Not only this, she also received the Best Female Playback Singer Award for her song Darling from Vishal Bhardwaj's film Saat Khoon Maaf. This song was filmed on Priyanka Chopra .
