Aap Jaisa Koi Netflix: Netflix’s upcoming film ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ has already created a buzz with its trailer, winning hearts across the internet. In a recent interview, the film’s lead stars – R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh – along with director Vivek Soni, opened up about the film’s emotional depth, the challenges of their characters, and evolving ideas of love in today’s world. Here are some highlights from the conversation:

  • The trailer has received a lot of praise. But fans are asking—why isn’t such a powerful story being released in theatres?

Vivek Soni: This has always been a Netflix original. The idea came from Netflix to Dharmatic, and that’s how the story began. From the very start, it was made specifically for a digital platform.

  • How did the idea for ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ originate? Was it inspired by a personal experience?

Vivek Soni: The concept was developed by writers Radhika Anand and Jehan Handa. When I read their 5–6-page draft, I saw a lot of potential to explore themes like loneliness, the search for companionship, family interference, and patriarchy. It felt timely and deeply relevant.

  • Viewers are comparing you to ‘Manu Sharma’ from Tanu Weds Manu after watching the trailer. How do you feel about that?

R. Madhavan: I haven’t done many romantic films—Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, a bit in Rang De Basanti, and Tanu Weds Manu. So when audiences see me clean-shaven, they immediately think of Manu Sharma! But this character is very different. This story reflects the complexities of modern relationships—loneliness, slower connections, and the peace of small-town life.

  • As a single person in real life, does portraying romance on screen become purely technical or emotionally challenging?

Fatima (laughing): Thanks for reminding me I’m single! But honestly, the script was written so beautifully that a connection between the characters was already established. Working with Madhavan was easy—he’s sensitive, kind, and filled with a childlike enthusiasm.

  • Are romantic scenes harder to perform than other emotional scenes?

Fatima: Nothing is easy. If you don’t genuinely feel the emotion, the audience will see right through it—it shows on your face.
Madhavan: Every emotion is tough, but in romance, the camera is very close, and if you're not truly feeling it, the chemistry looks fake. Authenticity is crucial. You need a real connection with the lens.

  • Real-life couples often lack chemistry on screen. Do you agree?

Madhavan: Absolutely! Often, real-life couples don’t deliver convincing chemistry because love on screen is more about longing and desire. If you’ve already attained each other in real life, that tension is missing on screen.

  • Do you think age-appropriate and emotionally mature love stories are now more accepted in Indian cinema?

Fatima: Yes! Earlier, the male leads would be twice the age of the heroines. But now, audiences reject that. People want realistic and respectful portrayals of love.

  • The film explores loneliness and modern relationships. Has the definition of love changed in today’s times?

Fatima: Love is still the same, but people have begun distancing themselves from it. Many say, “I don’t want commitment,” but deep down, everyone is seeking real love. The biggest pain today is feeling lonely even in a relationship.
Madhavan: There’s no such thing as the perfect partner. Today, romance has become a compromise—“This is my space, that’s yours.” But love is about surrender. I always say, travel the world—you’ll learn more about yourself than anything else.

  • The film includes a somewhat toxic lover. Is portraying such characters a sensitive responsibility for filmmakers?

Vivek Soni: It’s all about the lens through which you portray the character. Are you glorifying the behavior or exposing its flaws? As creators, we have a responsibility to influence society positively.
Madhavan: Exactly! Sometimes a person thinks they’re changing, but their toxic patterns remain. Instead of only blaming them, it’s important to explain what’s wrong and help them understand.

  • Lastly, what’s one myth about celebrity dating that you’d like to bust?

Fatima: People think it’s easy for us to date. But honestly, our emotional complexities require a very mature and secure partner. Dating someone outside the industry can be a completely different and sometimes difficult experience.

‘Aap Jaisa Koi’, starring R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh, releases on July 11 on Netflix.
