Sanjeev Mehra, who has captured the hearts of many with his talent in theatre, television, writing, and photography, is back on screen with the film The Buckingham Murders, where he plays Kareena Kapoor's father. Having started in theatre, transitioned to TV, and now making his mark in films, he shares insights about his journey and his connection with MayaPuri.

  • You’ve been seen a lot on TV. When did you start your career, and who inspired you?

I was born in Delhi and began my career at the age of 11. Initially, I did theatre and attended classes in music and drama at Bal Bhavan, a well-known institution in Delhi. I was surrounded by many talented people, including Rekha Bhardwaj and Sushma. Our teacher was Mohini Mathur. I have performed in about fifteen hundred live theatre shows. I also started a group called ‘Sakshi,’ which began with 4-5 members and grew to over 85, becoming the largest theatre group in North India. We had many talented individuals like Abhina Sherwani, Rajendra Goyal, and Saurabh Shukla among us.

My first serial was Hum Log, India’s first TV series, where I worked both in front of and behind the camera. I also connected with MayaPuri, where I worked in animation for several years. Later, I did the show Sada Punjab, completing over a hundred episodes, along with various other shows. My video journey began during this time, but I never left theatre. I've had the opportunity to meet many great talents, including Manoj Bajpayee and Piyush Mishra, and it’s wonderful to see how well everyone has done.

क

  • You’ve also worked with Irrfan Khan. What was that experience like?

It was fantastic. We were old friends and had worked together in theatre. Irrfan was brilliant. We worked together in the series Great Maratha, where I played a challenging role as a hijra. I feel fortunate to have collaborated with such outstanding individuals, including Muzaffar Ali and Ashok Kumar.

  • You recently worked on The Buckingham Murders. How was that experience?

My last film was Wada Raha, featuring Kangana Ranaut and Bobby Deol. After moving to Australia in 2008, I received various offers, but I couldn’t take them since I was abroad. However, during the COVID period, some old serials resumed, and people began asking about me again. That led producers and OTT platform representatives to reach out. I spoke with Mukesh Chhabra, sent him my photos and information, and just 15 minutes later, he asked if I would go to London for this film. It was an opportunity to work alongside stars like Kareena Kapoor, marking my comeback to Bollywood.

  • What was your experience working with Kareena Kapoor?

It was very pleasant. She is warm and friendly, and we shared a lot of light-hearted conversations.

यह

  • Did you face any challenges playing her father?

Not at all. When we first met at the hotel, she called me "Papa ji." Kareena is very easygoing. We had a photo shoot on that day, and despite bad weather, we managed to get through it quickly.

घ

  • How was your experience with Hansal Mehta?

Hansal is incredibly talented and understanding. He works in a very relaxed manner. I’ve known him for quite some time.

  • What upcoming projects do you have?

I have a couple of films in the pipeline, both from reputable banners, along with a serial. I also have my own projects, including a film and a series. I worked on the Australian version of the Sony Liv show Adrashyam. Plus, I'm writing a few books.

  • What has your experience with MayaPuri been like? How is your bond with them?

Bajaj sir is incredibly creative and has a forward-thinking mindset. I remember when there was no AC, he used to find ways to keep us cool during hot weather. Since I'm also a creative person, I felt a strong connection. Whenever I proposed an idea to Aman sir, he never rejected it. We share a great rapport.

इओ

  • What would you like to say to MayaPuri's audience?

MayaPuri is one of the oldest magazines in the industry. It has never prioritized profit over creativity, and it has nurtured many careers by promoting talent.
