Sonakshi Batra Shares Her Thoughts on Portraying Strength and Emotion in Zee TV’s ‘Jagadhatri’

A brand-new and powerful TV show ‘Jagadhatri’ has arrived, bringing a mix of emotion, drama, and action to the small screen. The show’s lead actress Sonakshi Batra is portraying a dynamic character that blends strength and sensitivity. In a special interview with Mayapuri Magazine journalist Shilpa Nalamwar, Sonakshi opened up about her role, the show’s storyline, her action sequences, and the preparation that went into it. What would you like to say about the show ‘Jagadhatri’?

This show is very special to me. Both the concept and the character are incredibly strong. Jagadhatriis a girl who longs for love from her family but doesn’t get it. Yet she chooses strength over self-pity and sets out to make something of her life. Her mission is to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death. Every episode ends on such a thrilling note that viewers will be left wondering what happens next.

What new can the audience expect from the show?

The best part is that every character is given importance — the stories are interconnected. There’s drama, action, and emotion — everything audiences love. What makes it unique is that for a change, you’ll see a woman doing high-octane action sequences on television, which is still quite rare.

You performed action scenes wearing a Nauvari saree in the promo. How was that experience?

That was something totally new for me. I’m playing a Marathi character for the first time, and wearing a Nauvari saree isn’t easy. On the first day, it took us a long time to drape it properly, but later we used a readymade one. Still, that outfit gives you a warrior-like energy. People often say that when I wear the Nauvari, my whole aura changes — I look more powerful.

How did you prepare for the action sequences?

Our fight master, Guru Ji, trained us for the action scenes. We rehearsed extensively for the promo. Now I’ve become quite comfortable — when the director says, “Ready to shoot,” I just need a few minutes to get into action mode. I used to feel nervous earlier, but not anymore. I’ve improved a lot and I want to keep getting better.

We’ve also seen you riding a bike in the show. Did you train for that too?

Yes! I knew how to ride a scooty before, but not a bike. When I got this show, I knew I had to learn. I took a few classes and practiced on set. I did fall a couple of times (laughs), but it was a lot of fun. Earlier, people used to say, “Girls can’t ride bikes,” but now that I’m doing it myself, it feels empowering.

How does it feel to perform action as a female lead?

It feels amazing! Usually, in TV shows or films, men are the ones who fight. But when a woman performs action, it inspires so many others. Such roles make me feel powerful. I want viewers to see Jagadhatri and say — “Yes, we can do that too.”

You also met members of the ‘Nirbhaya Squad.’ How was that experience?

It was truly inspiring. Our show’s story is inspired by real-life brave women like them. When they visited our set, we saw how dedicated they are — they serve society selflessly even while being on duty. Meeting them made me realize how important it is to represent such women on screen.

What message would you like to give your fans and the audience?

I’m super excited for everyone to see me in a completely new avatar. Jagadhatri has everything — drama, emotion, and action — and the best part is, the action is done by a woman!
