Veteran Bollywood director Sunil Darshan is once again in the spotlight with his upcoming film ‘Andaaz 2’. The 2003 superhit ‘Andaaz’ launched the careers of Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta alongside Akshay Kumar, and now, nearly 22 years later, Sunil Darshan is bringing that same spirit back to the big screen with a new generation.
Darshan Talks Andaaz 2, Fresh Talent & Evolving Cinema
In a recent interview, Darshan opened up not only about the making and intention behind ‘Andaaz 2’, but also shared his thoughts on the current direction of cinema, the need for fresh talent, and the evolving film industry. Let’s dive into the highlights of this candid and insightful conversation.
Why did you take such long breaks in your career?
Look, earlier people used to complain that I made films too frequently. But when the industry became corporatized, and money and stars started dominating over storytelling, I felt the need to pause. I always wanted to make films rooted in Indian culture and values. When I felt that soul was getting lost, taking a break didn’t seem strange to me.
Why do you think even big star-studded films are failing at the box office nowadays?
Earlier, directors made films — today, it’s the stars who make them. Over the past 15–20 years, we’ve handed over complete control to the stars. This has diluted the authenticity of stories and characters. When a 65-year-old actor plays a 25-year-old character, it feels odd and unrealistic.
When did the idea of making ‘Andaaz 2’ come to you?
Initially, I wasn’t planning to title the film Andaaz. I had written a story involving a new triangular love story and social themes. Once the final version of the script was ready, we named it Andaaz 2. It’s not exactly a sequel, but it carries forward the spirit of the original.
Why did you choose a new cast for this film?
It’s my duty to bring new stars into the industry. If we don’t introduce new talent, there will be an imbalance in the storytelling and casting of films. Youthful characters should be played by actual young people — that brings realism and freshness.
How important is music in Andaaz 2, and which singers are involved?
Music has always played a major role in my films. In Andaaz 2, amazing singers like Javed Ali, Palak Muchhal, Amit Trivedi, and Mohammad Irfan have lent their voices. Working with them has been a wonderful experience.
Why did you cast Akshay Kumar in Jaanwar when his career was down?
When everyone else rejected him, I saw the hard work and sincerity in him. During that tough phase, Akshay came to me and said — “I give myself entirely to you.” I trusted him, and that determination paid off. We made Jaanwar, Ek Rishtaa, and other films together — and his career revived.
How did you choose Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta for Andaaz?
I wanted to give a chance to fresh faces. I saw Lara during a photoshoot — there was an innocence in her that reminded me of Nutan. Priyanka came to my office with an acquaintance, and I noticed her eyes, voice, and command over Hindi — all very original. Even though others had rejected her, I could see the star quality in her.
How was your relationship with Akshay Kumar?
My journey with Akshay has been very special. We made seven films together over seven years. During that time, we shared deep trust, dedication, and a strong friendship. He was someone willing to work sixteen hours a day. We gave a lot to each other, both professionally and as human beings. Though our contact has reduced over time, I still hold immense respect and good wishes for him. Seeing his success gives me genuine happiness.
What was your experience working with Sunny Deol?
I always respected Sunny and did several films with him. However, due to some misunderstandings and situations, the mature trust we had was broken. I still regret that we couldn't rebuild that bond again.
What are your thoughts on the rising popularity of web series? Would you like to create one in the future?
Change is a natural law of life. Yes, I’ve thought about it. If I get a good script and the right budget, I may consider making a web series. But my focus has always been on cinematic value.
Which of your past films would you like to remake or re-release?
Jaanwar, Ek Rishtaa, Dosti, and Barsaat — these are my favorite films. They’re still relevant today and, in many ways, better than many new films.
Any message for audiences about the release of Andaaz 2?
Andaaz 2 will definitely offer something to the audience — entertainment, emotional moments, and life lessons. I warmly invite everyone to watch it.
