Vivaan Shah discusses Ikkis character Captain Vijender Malhotra, recalls Dharmendra

Vivaan Shah has been making headlines for his upcoming film Ikkis. In a recent interview, he shared several interesting and lesser-known details about his character, Captain Vijender Malhotra, in the film based on the 1971 war. He also spoke about superstar Dharmendra. Here’s what he had to say:

When Ikkis was offered to you, what were you told about the film?

I was told that the film is inspired by the 1971 war and the bravery of Arun Khetarpal. I am playing the role of Captain Vijender Malhotra—an officer who was slightly unconventional in his thinking and methods. He even took his dog with him into battle and used his intelligence and unique strategies to outsmart the enemy.

How did you prepare for this role?

I learned a lot from Captain Malhotra’s photographs, stories, and military training references. I was also inspired by my uncle, General Zameer Udin Shah, who took part in the 1971 war. The first thing I worked on was my body language and posture, because Captain Malhotra was extremely disciplined and had a strong personality.

Which aspect of this character touched you the most?

His bond with his dog. It’s very emotional and beautiful. I’ve recently become a dog parent myself, so I now understand how deep and unconditional that relationship can be. Apart from that, his strategic thinking and moral strength deeply impressed me.

How big a responsibility is it to portray a real-life character?

It’s a huge responsibility, especially when the person’s family is still around. For me, it was important not to let imagination go beyond facts and to portray his spirit honestly on screen.

Do such roles come to you often?

Honestly, no. Because of my boyish looks, roles like police or army officers are usually not offered to me. That’s why this opportunity was very special and fortunate for me.

What does being part of Dharmendra ji’s last film mean to you?

Dharmendra ji has been my father’s childhood hero. He is an integral part of our cultural consciousness and a symbol of heroism, sensitivity, and charisma. Even though I didn’t have scenes with him, just being part of the same project is a very big thing for me.

Is it difficult today for an actor to balance art and commercial cinema?

Yes, it has become a bit difficult. Actors from earlier generations comfortably worked in both kinds of films. Today, if an actor is considered ‘serious,’ people are surprised to see them in action or commercial roles. This is a kind of bias.

Where do you see yourself in your career today?

I consider myself very fortunate. I have done several films in which I put my heart and soul, but they didn’t reach a wide audience at the time of release. Now, through OTT platforms, those films are getting a new life. This has taught me that focusing on the process is more important than worrying about the results.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned so far?

That no experience ever goes to waste. Disappointments are part of this profession, but every project teaches you something. Learning to enjoy the journey is the most important thing.
