Early life

Sanya Malhotra was born on February 25, 1992, into a Punjabi family in Delhi. Her father, Sunil Malhotra, is an engineer, while her mother, Raina Malhotra, is a homemaker. Sanya also has an elder sister, Shagun Malhotra, who works in jewelry designing. Sanya's family is not from the film industry, but they always supported her interest in acting and dance. When Sanya decided to move to Mumbai to pursue a career in films, her parents supported her completely. Sanya has stated in several interviews that her family's strong support and faith are the biggest driving forces behind her success, keeping her grounded and confident. After completing her studies, she participated in "Dance India Dance" and reached the top 100. Later, she returned to Mumbai and began auditioning and working as a camera assistant for TV commercials. It was there that she met casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

Recognition from 'Dangal' (2016–2019)

Sanya was cast alongside Fatima Sana Shaikh in Nitesh Tiwari's "Dangal." She underwent rigorous training for her wrestling role, preparing under the guidance of coach Kripa Shankar Patel Bishnoi. Released in 2016, "Dangal" grossed over ₹20 billion worldwide, and Sanya's performance was praised by critics as a "strong support."

Following this, in 2018, she delivered a powerful performance in Vishal Bhardwaj's "Pataakha," a story of two sisters from Rajasthan. In Mrs. (2024/25), the Hindi remake of the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen, she gave a powerful portrayal of a newlywed woman struggling with patriarchal traditions and received unanimous praise.
