Director Anurag Kashyap wrote a long note reviewing Jaideep Ahlawat's recently released show Paatal Lok Season 2. He started his review by talking about renowned South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho's award-winning acceptance speech for Parasite, in which he said, "Once you cross the one-inch high barrier of subtitles, you will get to see many more great films."
Anurag Kashyap on Paatal Lok, Black Warrant, and More
Anurag Kashyap further admitted that while he was proud of Sacred Games, he was left with a "powerful, depressing" chronicle of his low depths with Paatal Lok, which was created by Sudip Sharma and Avinash Arun Dhaware. According to him, it was the pinnacle of writing, direction, and performance that could not be surpassed. Talking about Jahaan Kapoor's latest Netflix show based on Tihar Jail, he said, "2025 started with a bang with Black Warrant and the bar was already high."
The filmmaker revealed that he has changed his routine and goes to sleep early. He said that somehow he was unable to sleep and he watched the first episode of the new season. "The opening scene of Jonathan Thom's body being found snatched away my remaining sleep and I was so quickly lost in the world of Hathi Ram Chaudhary, as if it were a swamp. The depths of human darkness in which he lives, always looking for some hope, which will come and will not," he added.
Kashyap said the series is a thriller, mystery, and set in an area that everyone knows but doesn't pay attention to. He praised the poignant writing that reflects the "hypocrisy that exists collectively within our society". The filmmaker urged viewers to watch the series with subtitles for its authenticity, creative courage,e and acting talent. "And the end suddenly shows you the light in a way, it broke me because I wanted it but didn't see it coming," he admitted.
The series was called a masterclass
The Maharaj actor continued his review in the comments section to give a special mention to the star cast. "As for Jaideep Ahlawat. For me, this is not only his best performance to date. I would call it the best performance of 2020 by any actor I have seen here. He is not acting, he is the embodiment of Hathiram Chaudhary. This is a masterclass in acting. I am in awe," he wrote. Lastly, he congratulated the entire team and the brilliant performances of Ishwak Singh and Tillotama Shome.
