Shreya Ghoshal was offered many songs

In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Shreya Ghoshal revealed that after Chikni Chameli, she was offered several songs with lyrics she found objectifying. Shreya said that a composer friend once offered her a song with deeply offensive and meaningless lyrics, such as "make me a chicken and eat it" or "hold me like this." She flatly refused to sing such tracks because she felt ashamed just thinking about those words and wanted to maintain dignity in her work.

'I wasn't that mature at that time' - Shreya Ghoshal

Talking about Chikni Chameli, she said, "That song isn't just a fun song. There's a lot of artistry in it. There were toned-down versions. The song that finally appeared in the film was more subtle than the original draft, though still suggestive. At the time, I didn't always understand what I was singing. I wasn't mature enough to fully understand the meaning of some of the lines."

Shreya Ghoshal refused to sing such songs.

When Raj mentioned that she faced trolling because she spoke out about objectification, yet continued to perform the song at concerts, Shreya clarified that she wasn't ashamed. She said, "Yes, I performed it. I love that song. I think it's good. But I won't record songs like that anymore. I'm not ashamed. I sang that song at that time. It's a song I'll always have to live with, where even kids in the audience can dance to it. Sometimes I close my eyes, but I can't deny it. It's my song. I've embraced it."

Why did Shreya Ghoshal have to face evil?

During a chat with Lilly Singh in 2025, Shreya admitted that she had sung some raunchy songs in her career, including Chikni Chameli, which she wouldn't sing today. She said, "There's a very thin line between being sensual, sexy, and being completely objectified, or objectifying women in general. Over time, I've become more conscious because I see little girls singing these songs without understanding their meaning. They're just dancing to them, and they come up to me and say, 'Oh, we loved your song! Can we sing it for you?' And I feel so embarrassed. A little girl, just five or six years old, singing those lyrics, it doesn't feel right."
