Gujarat High Court stays the release of Junaid Khan's film 'Maharaj'

Aamir Khan's elder son Junaid's debut film Maharaj has been mired in controversy even before its release. Junaid Khan is debuting with Maharaj directed by Siddharth P Malhotra. In fact, the Gujarat High Court has stayed the release of the film following a petition by a Hindu group claiming that the film has the potential to incite violence. The report states that "the stay order was issued on a petition filed by devotees of Lord Krishna and followers of Vallabhacharya, who belong to the Pushtimarg sect." The petition was filed on the grounds that the film, which revolves around the 1862 Maharaj defamation case, could cause disruption of public order and also incite violence against followers of the sect.

The case will be heard on June 18

The petition states that the 1862 Maharaj defamation case was based on allegations of misbehavior by a prominent person and was adjudicated by English judges of the Supreme Court of Bombay. It contains severely blasphemous remarks against Lord Krishna as well as devotional songs and bhajans. Meanwhile, the complaint also states that the film is planned to be released without adequate promotional material, including a trailer, so that there is limited access to the story. This may cause serious hurt to sentiments. On these grounds, Justice Sangeeta Visen of the Gujarat High Court passed an interim order banning the release of the film in any way. Now the hearing of the case is to be held on June 18.
